NWS issues flood watch for Kwethluk, with ice still jammed below Kalskag
The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for the area around Kwethluk, in effect through Tuesday afternoon. When the ice jam in the Kalskag area breaks, a pulse of water will flow downstream, and National Weather Service Hydrologist Johnse Ostman says it could impact communities downstream of Kalskag, including Tuluksak, Akiak, Akiachak and Kwethluk.

Kalskag remains on flood advisory, with ice jammed below the community

As of noon on Saturday (May 4), Upper and Lower Kalskag residents reported a rapid rise in water as ice started moving in front of town. According to one resident, water was about a foot below the power plant, but as of 12:00 p.m., power was still on in both Upper and Lower Kalskag.
Record snowfall weighs on Kuskokwim Ice Road
The Kuskokwim Ice Road remains open from the tundra villages all the way to Aniak, but record snowfall for the region is a heavy burden to bear for the river. “With all this snow and the berms getting bigger, and bigger, and heavier, we've been experiencing cracking in some areas with water coming out,” Kuskokwim Ice Road crew leader Mark Leary said on KYUK’s Talkline on March 8. “This is something we rarely ever see with the ice road.”
Kalskag man acquitted on murder charges after igniting 2022 house fire, officials say
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - A Kalskag man was acquitted of all charges in a December 2022 murder and arson case in the Western Alaska town of Upper Kalskag. A jury found 28-year-old Levi Levi not guilty on all charges Feb. 13 in a Bethel courthouse. Bethel District Attorney Mark Clark confirmed the acquittal Tuesday in an email.
Aniak trying to contain fuel spill
The City of Aniak, Alaska is working to manage a Feb. 16 fuel spill that has drenched one property and crossed a main roadway, Boundary Ave., not far from the Kuskokwim River. Aniak, population about 500, is 170 miles upriver from Kwigillingok, which has a major diesel fuel spill of over 8,000 gallons that the Kwig community is trying to keep from reaching the Kuskokwim River.
Kuskokwim Ice Road crew contends with variable weather to keep river traffic flowing
On Feb. 23, the Kuskokwim Ice Road crew confirmed that travel was safe from the tundra villages of Kasigluk and Nunapitchuk down the Johnson River, and up the Kuskokwim River all the way to Kalskag. However, they still urged travelers to prepare for the worst. Safe passage has also been confirmed from Kalskag further upriver to Aniak.
