Firefighters in Northridge, California, discovered the remains of two individuals inside a man-made cave on Sunday (May 5). The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) was investigating hazardous materials at 8700 North Lindley Avenue when they made the discovery, according to KTLA .

When fire crews arrived at the scene, they found two deceased people inside what's been described as a "human-dug cave or excavation" near an embankment. A white, powdered substance was also found at the scene, though fire officials have not specified what the substance is or if it is connected to the deaths .

The address listed is for Pacifica Senior Living, but it is unclear where exactly the cave was located within the area. The Los Angeles Times reported that an urban search and rescue team was called out to the site to determine if the cave needed shoring up. Officials said it didn't need shoring.

Authorities confirmed that the two victims were transients, per KTLA . LAPD spokesperson Tony Im told the LA Times no foul play was suspected in their deaths. The victims haven't been identified as of Monday morning (May 6).

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and no further details have been released at this time.
