Bass is in the nation’s capital as part of her role as chair of the United States Conference of Mayors’ task force on homelessness. The mayors will be lobbying to expand veteran eligibility for housing vouchers.

Bass explained to CNN how red tape and bureaucracy leave our nation’s veterans on the streets without options..

“And we have found that there is policy, all outdated policy that actually contributes to veterans, people who fought on behalf of our country to be on the streets,” she said. “So for example, a veteran in many cases has to choose between their veteran benefits or housing because if they take all their benefits, then their income is so high that they don't qualify for housing.”

The delegation will meet with the Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary, the Department of Health and Human Services, Xavier Becerra, and others in the administration.

Bass is expected to stay in Washington until Friday.
