Alleged Armed Suspect Fatally Shot by Police After Running From Pursuit Vehicle

Downtown Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA: An officer-involved shooting occurred early Friday morning shortly after suspects ran from a pursuit vehicle and officers made contact. One suspect was fatally shot by police after producing a handgun.

At approximately 1:00 a.m., May 5, Los Angeles Police Department officers observed a man with a gun in the area of Manchester and Hoover in Downtown Los Angeles. Upon making eye contact with the suspect, the suspect ran into a vehicle – a white Mercedes sedan – and immediately a vehicle pursuit ensued, reported Lt. Letisia Ruiz with LAPD Media Relations at an early morning press conference.

The suspects entered the 110 Freeway to the 10 East and exited on Maple where two suspects ran – one female, one male adult – and the vehicle continued to flee in an unknown direction. The male adult went underneath a bridge at the location. Officers made contact and the suspect produced a handgun. An officer-involved shooting then occurred, according to Ruiz.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased, said Ruiz.

Currently, two suspects are outstanding; the female who fled northbound on Maple, and the unknown male or female occupant in the white Mercedes. The department is working to apprehend those individuals.

It has not yet been determined exactly how many rounds were fired and how many officers were involved in the shooting.

There was a firearm at the scene that will be recovered and booked into evidence at a later time, said Ruiz.

The investigation into the incident is ingoing.
