Those who enjoyed last weekend’s rare Halloween showers may be in for a treat next week, as multiple storm systems appear to be building in the Pacific Northwest. “You may have noticed on some of the 7-days, we have a chance of rain late on Wednesday,” Meteorologist Henry DiCarlo said Thursday morning. “Your fall weather […]
The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning for parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties on Saturday.
Southern California coastal communities are bracing for another round of flooding as unusually high tides threaten to inundate streets and properties just a week after damaging more than 100 structures in Huntington Beach. An atmospheric river still has a “slight risk” of bringing heavy rainfall to Southern California by mid-November, according to the latest National Weather Service forecast. Southern California, including Los Angeles, has a 20 to 40% chance of heavy rain and high winds hitting the region between Nov. 11 and Nov. 17, according to the NWS forecast. […]
Thousands of homes and businesses north of Los Angeles face the risk of potential power cuts over the next two days as weak to moderate Santa Ana winds bring dangerous fire weather conditions. Southern California Edison is considering shutting off power to 4,639 homes and businesses in Los Angeles County,...
Huntington Beach residents are learning how to prepare their homes for another round of El Niño high tides.
California is already facing severe impacts from El Niño, mostly in the form of coastal flooding. From San Diego to the Bay area, many cities have been dealing with flooding off and on over the past few weeks. And climate scientists say that it's just a preview of what's to come this winter as El Niño continues to unfold. KQED's Ezra David Romero joins us now from San Francisco. Hi, Ezra.
The City of San Diego launched a series of public service workshops today to distribute free sandbags and provide El Niño safety information to residents, particularly seniors.
NOAA warns of further flooding risks as high tides and warmer ocean conditions raise water levels along the coast. Tide gauges recorded their highest water levels at four California locations as elevated seas flooded roads, homes and businesses, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). San Diego reached...
Over the past several weeks, Long Beach has been hit by king tides and residents have had to deal with severe flooding and recent sewage spills.
Residents and property owners in Newport Beach are urged to prepare immediately for King Tides expected to impact Southern California in late November through the new year.
The sea wall along the Long Beach Peninsula and several homes have been affected by rising tides and swells caused by a surging Kelvin wave and an El Niño. In early October, the effects of an El Niño pattern along the West Coast, and its growing movement of warm water toward Southern California, could put pressure on marine ecosystems adapted to colder ocean conditions, endangering marine life.
Both major almanacs expect a milder Southwest winter, but they split on Phoenix. Here is how the Farmers' Almanac, Old Farmer's Almanac and NOAA line up.
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA — Forecasters are watching for back-to-back storm systems aimed at California as the overall weather pattern is expected to shift significantly toward mid-November. Multiple powerful storms could arrive one after another, bringing periods of heavy rainfall, especially if atmospheric rivers become involved, which looks increasingly possible. Northern and Central California, including San Francisco and Sacramento, appear to be first in line. Southern California and nearby regions, including Los Angeles, San Diego and Las Vegas, could follow as the pattern evolves. The European model forecast for 10 p.m. PST Wednesday, November 11, shows a powerful jet stream stretching across the entire North Pacific Ocean straight into the California coast.
Southern Californians will enjoy a warm but windy weekend as Santa Ana winds develop, bringing summerlike temperatures and an elevated fire risk. There is also the potential for additional coastal flooding – ahead of a more dramatic shift to wetter weather later next week. According to the National Weather Service office in Los Angeles/Oxnard, offshore […]
Pacific Coast Highway is one of America's most iconic drives. And right now, one stretch of it is fighting to stay above the Pacific. At El Morro, beside Crystal Cove State Park near Laguna Beach, a massive fracture has opened along the bluff supporting PCH. Caltrans says the crack measures as much as 360 feet long and two feet wide. With the ocean chewing away at the slope below, crews are racing to stabilize the hillside before winter's worst storms arrive.
A Coastal Flood Advisory has been issued for San Diego and Orange Counties, effective from early Friday through Tuesday, with expectations of minor to moderate flooding and dangerous rip currents.
SANTA MONICA - Santa Monica has declared a local emergency ahead of winter, giving officials greater flexibility to buy storm supplies as forecasters warn El Niño could become the strongest recorded since 1950. The council adopted the declaration Oct. 27 as part of preparations for the 2026-27 winter season. Along the coast, city officials are preparing for beach erosion and unstable bluffs that could send mud and debris onto Pacific Coast Highway. Heavy rain could also overwhelm drainage systems and cause flooding. The city's preparations include cleaning more than 600 catch basins and building protective sand berms along the beach and storm drain outflows. Crews are also checking roofs and gutters at public facilities. For people experiencing homelessness, the winter response will temporarily ease shelter eligibility requirements during storms, allowing first responders and outreach teams to refer people indoors.Santa Monica's declaration follows state and Los Angeles County emergency actions in September . County officials said in September that departments were preparing for possible evacuations and shelter needs while Public Works crews inspected flood-control infrastructure.NOAA's Climate Prediction Center put the chance of a historically strong El Niño at 83% for October through December . Its Oct. 8 outlook described an event that could
