This Pennsylvania family has a newfound passion, and it's making quite a statement in their backyard.

The Meehan family is growing a giant pumpkin together!

They'll be driving its estimated 2000 pounds to the State Fair of Virginia for a competition this weekend.

At last year's State Fair of Virginia, they were champions in the Giant Pumpkin & Veggie Weigh Off for the Giant Pumpkin category.

Their son Alex, who lives with autism, finds great focus and passion for this hobby.

Four Ingredients Turn Cornmeal Into Crispy Southern Comfort

Southern hoecakes demonstrate how a few humble ingredients can create something far more memorable than their simplicity suggests. Cornmeal, liquid, egg, and hot fat come together into small cakes with crisp, golden edges and tender centers. The flavor is straightforward and deeply comforting, especially when bacon grease adds its smoky character to the pan. They resemble pancakes in shape but carry the rustic texture and savory corn flavor of skillet cornbread. Each cake develops plenty of browned surface, making those edges the part everyone searches for first. This is old-fashioned cooking built around necessity, thrift, and ingredients that were easy to keep on hand. The result remains valuable today because warm, crisp corn cakes still know how to make a bowl of beans or a plate of vegetables feel like a complete meal.

Three Ingredients Create These Old-Fashioned Pecan Pralines

Pecan pralines deliver buttery sweetness, caramelized flavor, and toasted nut crunch in a candy that feels closely connected to Southern kitchens. This three-ingredient version proves that the signature texture does not require an intimidating shopping list. As the sugar mixture cooks and cools, it settles around the pecans into creamy, slightly crumbly rounds with rich caramel notes. Every praline contains enough nuts to balance the sweetness and provide the crisp bite that makes the candy satisfying. Their rustic shapes add to the old-fashioned appeal, especially when arranged on parchment or stacked inside a gift box. The recipe is simple in ingredients but still feels special, which is exactly why pralines remain welcome during holidays and celebrations.
