After tragedy, Coach Jamal Allen inspires unshakeable determination in PA track club

2024-09-10

In the wake of a tragic accident, Jamal Allen, also known as "Coach Shake," refused to let his passion go to waste.

He grew up as a devoted athlete but lost his ability to compete after an accident put him in a wheelchair.

His guidance on the track and field inspires a whole group of children to pursue their goals, no matter the hurdles.

"I'm in a wheelchair and I can't physically show the kids, but I have a bond with them," said Allen. "I told them I could have been negative about my accident, but I wasn't. And I'm still out here...literally until the wheels fall off."

Conagra Brands has stopped making Celeste frozen pizzas, ending production of the longtime grocery staple also known as Mama Celeste. The company will sell its remaining inventory, but once those pizzas are gone, there will be no more products.

I Started Drinking This Bedtime Tea and I Fall Asleep So Much Better

I’m not someone who falls asleep easily, and I’ve learned that my evenings need a little ritual to wind down. This bedtime tea has become mine. It’s soft, floral, and lemony, and it tells my brain the day is done. 😊

I Add A Box Of This To My Deviled Eggs, And They Turn Out Perfect Every Time

These deviled eggs, made with a box of cream cheese, have a smoother, richer filling than the classic mayo-only kind. We blend the yolks with softened cream cheese, mayo, Dijon, and yellow mustard, then pipe them back into the whites. They take about 45 minutes from pot to platter.

Feel a Sore Throat Coming On? Drink This Tea First

That first scratchy tickle in the back of my throat is my cue to put the kettle on. This is the warm tea I make, with thyme, ginger, lemon, and honey. 😊. I can’t promise this tea will stop a sore throat in its tracks, but a hot drink does help. In one study, a hot fruit drink gave people subjective relief from common cold symptoms, and honey has good evidence for soothing cough, which often comes with a sore throat. Thyme is a traditional herb for the throat, and ginger is warming and comforting.

The Sweet Potatoes Granny Made Before Marshmallows Took Over Everything

Some sweet potatoes don’t need a blanket of marshmallows to earn space on the holiday table. Granny’s version is all about the potatoes themselves, cooked until tender and coated in that glossy, buttery, candied goodness that settles around the edges of the dish. Each bite lands somewhere between a side dish and dessert—soft sweet potatoes, warm sweetness, and a rich sauce that makes you understand why somebody always sneaks an extra spoonful before the platter gets passed. It’s the kind of recipe that looks completely at home beside ham, turkey, dressing, and all the other dishes families expect to see every year.

Coconut Cream Dream Cake Lives Up to Its Name

Coconut cream dream cake layers soft cake with creamy filling, fluffy topping, and plenty of coconut flavor. Moisture settles into the crumb, giving every slice a lush texture that feels rich without becoming dense. Whipped topping keeps the finish light, while shredded coconut adds a delicate chew and immediately announces the tropical flavor. Served cold, the cake is refreshing enough for summer but comforting enough to earn a place on holiday dessert tables.

Cabbage and Potatoes Still Know How to Feed a Family Without Emptying the Grocery Budget

Some of the most comforting meals come from ingredients that never needed to be fancy. This Irish-inspired bacon, cabbage, and potato soup brings together humble staples in one steaming pot, with smoky, salty bacon giving the broth the kind of flavor that makes simple vegetables taste like something you planned all day. The potatoes turn tender and hearty, cabbage softens into the savory broth, and those little pieces of bacon keep every spoonful interesting. It’s warm, rustic food built around ingredients generations of home cooks have relied on when dinner needed to stretch. Nothing here is trying to impress you with a long shopping list. It’s simply the sort of bubbling soup that fills the kitchen with a good smell and makes a loaf of bread on the counter suddenly feel like part of dinner.

When Regular Spaghetti Gets Boring, I Put the Whole Thing in the Oven

Spaghetti night is dependable, but sometimes a bowl of noodles and sauce feels like you’re running the same dinner on repeat. Baking it changes the personality completely. The pasta settles into a hearty meat sauce, the top gets hot and bubbly, and those little browned edges around the pan become the bites people quietly compete for. Instead of sauce sliding off the noodles, everything comes together into scoopable, saucy portions that feel more like a casserole than another plate of spaghetti. It’s familiar enough for picky eaters but different enough to make that same package of ground beef and box of pasta interesting again.
