First Christian Church is the first LGBT-affirming church in Katy. The church offers a list of services, including the Transparent Closet, where people transitioning can get free clothes.

"We want it to feel like a safe place and we want to have anything that you could ever imagine needing in your time of transition and exploration," Reverend Heather Tolleson said.

The closet was first an idea from a church member with a transgender son. In 2019, the closet started as a small shelf and has grown to a 4,000 square feet space.

Grandma Was Right About Potatoes and Onions

Sometimes the most memorable food begins with ingredients so ordinary that their transformation feels almost unfair. Southern Fried Taters and Onions take potatoes, sliced onion, garlic, oil, salt, and pepper and turn them into a skillet full of golden edges, tender centers, and deep savory flavor. As the potatoes cook, some pieces crisp against the hot pan while others remain soft enough to soak up the sweetness released by the onions. That mix of textures is what makes a simple recipe so hard to leave alone. Every serving contains a few crunchy bites, several buttery-soft slices, and caramelized onion tucked between them. No cream sauce, specialty cheese, or expensive meat is required to make the skillet smell like a proper country breakfast or old-fashioned family supper.

These Ritz Cracker Sandwiches Vanish Before the Party Starts

Ritz Party Sandwiches transform familiar buttery crackers into warm, savory appetizers that are exactly the right size for grabbing from a crowded table. Cheese and flavorful sandwich fillings sit between pairs of crackers, creating miniature bites with a crisp exterior and rich center. As they bake, the cheese melts, the filling warms, and the crackers become even more aromatic without losing the delicate texture that makes Ritz crackers so recognizable. Each small sandwich delivers salt, butter, cheese, and savory flavor in one or two bites, which explains why people rarely stop after taking only one. The recipe does not require elaborate pastry, specialty bread, or hours of preparation, yet the completed tray looks more thoughtful than simply opening a box of crackers. It is party food built around convenience without tasting like the cook took an obvious shortcut.

Remember the White Candy That Seemed to Appear in Every Grandma’s Christmas Tin?

Divinity is one of those old-fashioned candies that can instantly bring back a kitchen you haven’t stood in for years. Light, fluffy, and almost cloud-like, it’s nothing like dense fudge or chewy caramel. The outside sets with a delicate finish while the center stays soft and airy, with that unmistakable melt-away sweetness that made it a holiday candy-table favorite. It looks deceptively simple, but anyone who grew up watching a grandmother, aunt, or church-supper expert make a batch probably remembers there was a little technique involved. When it turns out right, those snowy spoonfuls look beautiful piled onto a platter—and somehow taste even better after you’ve spent years wondering why people stopped making them.

Five Minutes Is Apparently All This Fudge Needs

Homemade fudge sounds like the kind of candy that requires thermometers, precise timing, and a family secret guarded for several generations. This five-minute version refuses to cooperate with that reputation. It delivers rich chocolate flavor, a smooth texture, and the satisfying density of traditional fudge without turning the kitchen into a confectionery laboratory. The mixture comes together quickly on the stove, leaving the chilling time to handle most of the actual work. Once set, it cuts into neat little squares that look perfectly at home in a holiday candy tin or piled on a dessert tray. The chocolate is deep enough to satisfy a serious craving, while the small portions keep the richness manageable—at least until someone reaches for another piece. It is the kind of recipe that makes you wonder why fudge ever felt intimidating in the first place.

This Macaroni Salad Knows Why It Disappears First

Macaroni salad can be forgettable when it is merely cold pasta covered in dressing, but this version earns attention with a careful balance of sweet, tangy, creamy, and crunchy. Tender macaroni provides the familiar base, while crisp vegetables interrupt the softness and bring freshness to every scoop. The dressing coats the pasta generously without flattening the other flavors, delivering the nostalgic deli-counter quality people expect while tasting far more personal than something purchased by the pound. A touch of sweetness softens the tang and makes the salad especially friendly beside smoky barbecue, salty meats, and spicy dishes. After chilling, the ingredients settle together and the dressing moves into the pasta, creating the creamy consistency that makes people take a much larger spoonful than they originally intended.

7 Christmas Candies Mothers Made at the Kitchen Table

I use AI to help draft these articles. Every recipe and every fact in them is checked before publishing. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas from the 1950s into the 1980s, the kitchen in plenty of American homes shifted into a different gear. Cookies went first, then candy, and candy was a different kind of work. It called for a thermometer, the heaviest pot you owned, a marble slab or a sheet of buttered foil, and real attention. Women swapped these recipes on index cards at the church bazaar or through the small spiral-bound cookbooks their church and club auxiliaries printed and sold. When the candy was done it went into a tin on wax paper, stacked in layers by type, and passed along to neighbors or kept on the counter through the holiday.
