Today, Frederick Shegog is a motivational speaker with a meaningful message. But eight years ago, his situation was quite different.

"I found myself homeless, downtown dumpster diving, begging for change," he said. "And I wanted to die. I had given up on life. I quit."

On the brink of despair, a stranger showed kindness to Shegog.

That inspired him to seek treatment, go to college, and start his own business.

Now, Shegog travels the country providing keynote speeches through his company, 'The Message, LLC.'

Most recently, he spoke to Montgomery County Community College about legacy, working hard and mental health.

"So, I'm here today to share my story and let them know inspire, educate and create, you can be whatever you want," he said. "It's not how you start. It's how you finish."

In the future, Shegog hopes to acquire a master's degree and pursue a doctorate.

He also aspires to become more involved with spurring positive policy changes in government.

This Strawberry Dessert Was Made to Steal the Whole Table

Some desserts sit politely in the corner, but a Southern strawberry punch bowl cake is designed to command the center of the table. Layers of tender cake, juicy strawberries, and cool creamy filling build against the sides of a clear bowl, showing off every color and texture before anyone takes the first serving. The berries bring freshness, the cream makes each spoonful soft and luxurious, and the cake absorbs enough of the surrounding flavor to become even better as it chills. Instead of precise slices, this dessert offers generous scoops where the layers mingle together, making every bowlful slightly different. It feels festive without becoming formal and nostalgic without looking dated. Once the serving spoon reaches the bottom and lifts all those layers at once, people understand why punch bowl cakes have remained such beloved gathering desserts.

Mama’s Goulash Tastes Like the Dinner Everyone Remembers

Mama’s Goulash combines elbow macaroni, seasoned ground beef, tomatoes, onions, bell pepper, and cheese into a saucy one-pan dinner that feels immediately familiar. The macaroni cooks until tender and catches the tomato-rich sauce inside every curve, while the beef makes the meal hearty enough to satisfy a crowded table. Onion and pepper soften into the background, contributing sweetness and savory flavor without distracting from the combination people expect. Cheese melts through the pasta and gives the sauce a comforting richness that plain beef and tomatoes cannot provide. This is American family-style goulash rather than a formal European stew, and its appeal comes from affordability, generosity, and the ability to turn basic pantry ingredients into a pot that smells like somebody’s childhood kitchen.

Cabbage and Potatoes Still Know How to Feed a Family Without Emptying the Grocery Budget

Some of the most comforting meals come from ingredients that never needed to be fancy. This Irish-inspired bacon, cabbage, and potato soup brings together humble staples in one steaming pot, with smoky, salty bacon giving the broth the kind of flavor that makes simple vegetables taste like something you planned all day. The potatoes turn tender and hearty, cabbage softens into the savory broth, and those little pieces of bacon keep every spoonful interesting. It’s warm, rustic food built around ingredients generations of home cooks have relied on when dinner needed to stretch. Nothing here is trying to impress you with a long shopping list. It’s simply the sort of bubbling soup that fills the kitchen with a good smell and makes a loaf of bread on the counter suddenly feel like part of dinner.

Remember Sock-It-to-Me Cake? The Cake-Mix Shortcut Is Probably Why It Never Disappeared

Some cakes stick around because they’re beautiful. Sock-It-to-Me Cake stuck around because it’s the kind of thing somebody’s aunt, neighbor, or church friend could bring to a gathering and reliably take home an empty plate. This version starts with cake mix, but the real appeal is what happens after that shortcut: a soft, buttery cake with a sweet, warmly spiced ribbon tucked through the middle. Every slice has that old-school Bundt-cake look, with a golden exterior and a moist center that practically begs for a cup of coffee. It tastes nostalgic without requiring an afternoon of measuring flour and fussing over layers. If you remember this cake showing up at family reunions, potlucks, or Sunday dinners, one bite may explain why people kept passing the recipe around.

7 Christmas Candies Mothers Made at the Kitchen Table

I use AI to help draft these articles. Every recipe and every fact in them is checked before publishing. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas from the 1950s into the 1980s, the kitchen in plenty of American homes shifted into a different gear. Cookies went first, then candy, and candy was a different kind of work. It called for a thermometer, the heaviest pot you owned, a marble slab or a sheet of buttered foil, and real attention. Women swapped these recipes on index cards at the church bazaar or through the small spiral-bound cookbooks their church and club auxiliaries printed and sold. When the candy was done it went into a tin on wax paper, stacked in layers by type, and passed along to neighbors or kept on the counter through the holiday.

This Is the Cherry Dessert I’d Make When Company Is Coming in 20 Minutes

Some desserts need hours of careful baking, cooling, and decorating. This cherry angel food cake lush is what you make when the clock says you don’t have that kind of time. Soft, airy pieces of angel food cake meet cool, creamy layers and juicy cherries for a dessert that tastes far more put-together than its 20-minute prep suggests. The cake soaks up just enough of that sweet cherry goodness while still keeping its light, fluffy texture, and the creamy filling gives every spoonful that old-fashioned potluck-dessert richness. It’s bright, soft, fruity, and wonderfully messy in the way the best chilled desserts tend to be. Put it in a pretty serving dish and nobody needs to know how little time you actually spent in the kitchen.
