Teacher battling stage 4 colon cancer to conquer race

2024-01-10

Defying the constraints of stage 4 colon cancer, Orly Fuerst is participating in the Aramco Houston Half Marathon, alongside her daughter, Abrielle.

"She is the fiercest woman I have ever met," Abrielle shared. "They (doctors) said to her she would never run again and she's like 'watch me I'm watching a half marathon' next year. Since then she's been proving doctors wrong," Abrielle said.

Diagnosed in July 2022, the teacher at Torah Girls Academy was given a prognosis of 6-9 months. Remarkably, her cancer has not deterred her spirit or her strides.

"I get a sense of me and a sense of power. It's one of those things cancer couldn't take away from me," Orly said.

This weekend's race also serves a greater cause. The mother and daughter are raising funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society.

These Ritz Cracker Sandwiches Vanish Before the Party Starts

Ritz Party Sandwiches transform familiar buttery crackers into warm, savory appetizers that are exactly the right size for grabbing from a crowded table. Cheese and flavorful sandwich fillings sit between pairs of crackers, creating miniature bites with a crisp exterior and rich center. As they bake, the cheese melts, the filling warms, and the crackers become even more aromatic without losing the delicate texture that makes Ritz crackers so recognizable. Each small sandwich delivers salt, butter, cheese, and savory flavor in one or two bites, which explains why people rarely stop after taking only one. The recipe does not require elaborate pastry, specialty bread, or hours of preparation, yet the completed tray looks more thoughtful than simply opening a box of crackers. It is party food built around convenience without tasting like the cook took an obvious shortcut.

Whatever Happened to the Cake Everyone Bought at A&P?

For anyone who remembers Spanish Bar Cake, this one can unlock a very specific kind of nostalgia. That dark, warmly spiced cake with its soft, moist crumb and creamy frosting wasn’t flashy, but it had devoted fans who knew exactly what they were looking for in the bakery aisle. This homemade version brings that old favorite back with the cozy spice and rich cream cheese frosting that make each bite feel wonderfully old-fashioned. It’s the sort of cake that belongs beside a hot cup of coffee, preferably while somebody at the table says, “I haven’t had this in years.”

The Sweet Potatoes Granny Made Before Marshmallows Took Over Everything

Some sweet potatoes don’t need a blanket of marshmallows to earn space on the holiday table. Granny’s version is all about the potatoes themselves, cooked until tender and coated in that glossy, buttery, candied goodness that settles around the edges of the dish. Each bite lands somewhere between a side dish and dessert—soft sweet potatoes, warm sweetness, and a rich sauce that makes you understand why somebody always sneaks an extra spoonful before the platter gets passed. It’s the kind of recipe that looks completely at home beside ham, turkey, dressing, and all the other dishes families expect to see every year.

I Went To Italy and Was Given This Recipe From Our Bed and Breakfast Host

This Italian sausage pasta sauce was a real winner with my husband. I think he liked that it’s a meaty, creamy sauce instead of a traditional red sauce. Sausage, tomatoes, cream, and parmesan come together so it tastes like something from a little trattoria.

These deviled eggs, made with a box of cream cheese, have a smoother, richer filling than the classic mayo-only kind. We blend the yolks with softened cream cheese, mayo, Dijon, and yellow mustard, then pipe them back into the whites. They take about 45 minutes from pot to platter.

Coconut Cream Dream Cake Lives Up to Its Name

Coconut cream dream cake layers soft cake with creamy filling, fluffy topping, and plenty of coconut flavor. Moisture settles into the crumb, giving every slice a lush texture that feels rich without becoming dense. Whipped topping keeps the finish light, while shredded coconut adds a delicate chew and immediately announces the tropical flavor. Served cold, the cake is refreshing enough for summer but comforting enough to earn a place on holiday dessert tables.

Pecan Pie Just Turned Into a Cake for the Whole Crowd

Pecan Pie Cake captures the caramel-like sweetness and toasted nut flavor of pecan pie inside a soft, sliceable cake. Pecans contribute crunch and richness, while brown sugar and buttery ingredients recreate the sticky flavor associated with classic pie filling. Instead of relying on a thin pastry shell, this dessert distributes those flavors through tender cake layers, making it easier to serve generous portions to a crowd. Each bite brings soft crumb, sweet filling, and toasted pecans together rather than forcing the fork to choose between pie center and crust. It looks impressive on a holiday table but retains the warm, familiar character of a dessert people already recognize.

The Cookie I’d Still Pick Over Anything From a Fancy Bakery

Peanut butter cookies never needed frosting, fillings, or a dozen trendy ingredients to earn a place on the cookie plate. Give me the old-fashioned kind with those familiar fork marks across the top, crisp golden edges, and a soft center that still has a little chew when you break one open. The peanut butter does all the work, filling the kitchen with that warm, nutty smell before the pan even leaves the oven. They’re simple in exactly the right way—the kind of cookie that brings back school lunches, after-school snacks, and the old cookie jar that somehow never stayed full for long.
