World's largest collection of horror and sci-fi movie props is frightfully fascinating

Rich Correll started collecting Hollywood movie props as a child actor working on the Universal movie lot in the 1950s and 60s. He has amassed over 1800 costumes and props from horror, fantasy and science fiction films, the largest collection of its kind, which he exhibits under the banner Icons of Darkness on Hollywood Boulevard.

"It's either hero stuff that the actual actors wore or production-made by the studio," said Correll. "There's nothing here that's a fake. It's all the stuff that you really saw in the movies, and that's what the appeal of this place is."

"I think that it's pretty amazing to learn about the costumes," said Heather Parisi, a horror movie fan visiting Hollywood from Seattle, Washington. "Some of them are upwards of 75 pounds, and for someone to have to put that on their body and be in a movie like that is crazy."

These Ritz Cracker Sandwiches Vanish Before the Party Starts

Ritz Party Sandwiches transform familiar buttery crackers into warm, savory appetizers that are exactly the right size for grabbing from a crowded table. Cheese and flavorful sandwich fillings sit between pairs of crackers, creating miniature bites with a crisp exterior and rich center. As they bake, the cheese melts, the filling warms, and the crackers become even more aromatic without losing the delicate texture that makes Ritz crackers so recognizable. Each small sandwich delivers salt, butter, cheese, and savory flavor in one or two bites, which explains why people rarely stop after taking only one. The recipe does not require elaborate pastry, specialty bread, or hours of preparation, yet the completed tray looks more thoughtful than simply opening a box of crackers. It is party food built around convenience without tasting like the cook took an obvious shortcut.

Grandma’s Potato Soup Never Needed Twenty Ingredients

Modern potato soup recipes often arrive loaded with cheese, bacon, cream cheese, toppings, and a shopping list long enough to make a simple supper feel expensive. Grandma’s five-ingredient version takes the opposite approach. Potatoes provide the body, a few basic ingredients build the broth, and gentle cooking turns everything into a warm, comforting bowl without unnecessary additions. The simplicity allows the potato flavor to remain clear while creating the kind of creamy texture people expect from old-fashioned soup. It is especially useful when the refrigerator looks bare, the pantry is uncooperative, and dinner still needs to happen. A short ingredient list also means fewer measurements, less preparation, and an affordable pot large enough to serve several people. This soup does not attempt to compete with restaurant menus. It offers something more dependable: familiar warmth made from ingredients ordinary kitchens are likely to have.

That Humble Head of Cabbage Can Become a Big Pot of Comfort in 30 Minutes

A head of cabbage doesn’t look particularly exciting sitting in the produce drawer, but give it a soup pot, a handful of vegetables, and some savory broth, and it becomes something wonderfully comforting. This hearty cabbage soup is packed with tender vegetables and warm, satisfying flavor, making it a practical choice when you want something nourishing without a complicated ingredient list. As the cabbage softens, it takes on the flavors of the broth and seasonings, while the other vegetables add color, texture, and natural sweetness. The result is a steaming bowl that feels light yet substantial, especially when you’re craving something homemade after several days of heavier meals. There’s nothing fancy about it, and that’s part of the appeal. Sometimes a simple vegetable soup is exactly what the kitchen—and the grocery budget—needs.

Grandma Didn’t Need Fancy Ingredients to Make This Cake

Granny’s Thrifty Made Cake belongs to the dependable category of desserts created to taste good without requiring expensive ingredients, complicated fillings, or professional decorating equipment. The cake is simple, buttery, sturdy, and topped with homemade buttercream that gives every slice the familiar sweetness people expect from an old-fashioned celebration cake. Its appeal is not built around a trendy flavor or an elaborate surprise hidden inside. Instead, it relies on a tender crumb, recognizable ingredients, and the sort of straightforward preparation that allowed generations of home bakers to produce something special from an ordinary pantry. That kind of reliability is precisely why recipes like this survive long after more elaborate desserts have been forgotten.
