Across 60 years, a St. Louis institution still makes some of the city's best fried chicken

In St. Louis, some things are just understood. The Arch stands tall, Cardinals red runs deep - and when someone says “Hodak’s,” the first word out of anyone’s mouth is chicken. That’s the kind of reputation most restaurants dream of, and one that Ralph and Charlene Hegel have spent decades honoring and expanding.

When the couple took over Hodak’s in 1989, they were no strangers to the restaurant business. In fact, they were managing other restaurants when the opportunity to own this South City landmark presented itself. “There wouldn’t be anything better than owning a St. Louis Landmark,” Charlene said.

Founded in 1962, Hodak’s began as a humble tavern on the corner of 14th and Emmett. It was here that owners Tony and Helen would, on occasion, bring in Helen’s golden-fried chicken. As it happened, Helen’s mouth-watering recipe became a hit with the neighborhood, and Hodak’s Restaurant and Bar was born. Highway and business expansion forced the Hodaks to move twice, before settling at the current location at Gravois and McNair.

From day one after they bought the business, Ralph and Charlene knew what not to mess with. “We kept everything as it was and added onto the menu,” Charlene shared. Their changes came from a place of love, not reinvention: a private event space, expanded catering options, and an unwavering commitment to staying true to the comfort food Hodak’s has always been known for. Whether you’re grabbing carryout after a Cardinals game, sitting down after a visit to the zoo, or ordering bulk fried chicken for your church picnic - Hodak’s has become the backdrop to generations of local memories.

Walking into Hodak’s feels a bit like coming home. Booths are filled with laughter, the aroma of freshly fried chicken fills the air, and longtime servers greet regulars by name. “Our employees are like family,” Charlene said. “Many have been with us for 15 to 35 years.” That kind of loyalty isn’t just rare - it’s the secret ingredient behind Hodak’s lasting magic. “We celebrate birthdays, share stories, and work side by side every day. That’s what motivates us.”

Of course, running a business with such deep roots comes with its own set of challenges. Staying on top of marketing, adapting to changing trends, and keeping up with the fast pace of the restaurant world requires both dedication and serious time management. But the rewards far outweigh the hurdles. “There’s nothing more gratifying than to see everyone succeed in life,” Charlene said.

Hodak’s is more than a meal—it’s a St. Louis tradition. Families gather here to mark milestones. Kids grow up coming in after little league games. It’s a community hub where no one walks away hungry and no celebration feels too small.

And if you’re wondering what to order? Start with the signature Half Chicken Dinner - fresh, never frozen, hand-breaded, and fried just right. Add in a side of their homemade coleslaw and those golden crinkle-cut fries. Don’t forget the freshly breaded mushrooms, either. “Everyone always asks why the chicken and mushrooms are so good,” Charlene says with a smile. “That’s why - it’s all fresh, never frozen, and always made with care.”

Then, once you’ve cleaned your plate, check out the Hodak’s merch wall. It’s got as much personality as the restaurant itself, with slogans like “Love, Peace & Chicken Grease,” “Eat Me Here or Take Me Home,” and the fan favorite: “Live Today Like You’re Getting Fried Tomorrow.” Hoodies and hats are just part of the charm - wearing one is a nod to the unofficial club of folks who know where to find some of the best fried chicken in the Midwest.

As for the future? Ralph and Charlene are clear: “Carry on with the tradition! I can’t imagine St. Louis without Hodak’s.” And neither can the rest of us.
