New state could be on the horizon with proposal for secession in Illinois

12 hours agoA new state could be on the horizon in Illinois.
Some counties in rural Illinois want to break away from Chicago-- including a couple in the Quad Cities area.
Some people in Illinois support a move to form a new state if 33 counties secede from the state of Illinois. The proposal is on the ballot in Warren County, and Steve Winkler is among those spearheading it.
"A non-binding advisory referendum means it is just placed on the ballot," he told Our Quad Cities News. "It's not going to cost the citizens any money. It's interested in possibly moving from Illinois to a different state due to (supporters) not being happy."
Some people in Illinois feel overlooked by state lawmakers, and are disappointed with how the state is being run with such measures as taxation, the SAFE T Act and sanctuary cities.
The proposal itself doesn't create a new state without first getting approval from Congress. Winkler said there is already enough support and resources to establish a new state.
"We have our own constitution, we have our own senators, we have our own representatives," he said.
A similar proposal is on the ballet in Henderson County.
