LIVONIA (WWJ) -- Police responded to a Livonia middle school on Monday after a student brought a gun to class.

No one was hurt and no threats were made, but students were held in classrooms for a time as a matter of protocol, according to school officials.

In a letter sent to parents, the principal and district officials said the student who brought the gun voluntarily turned the it in to a staffer. The weapon was secured, and police were immediately notified.

The complete letter to parents reads as follows:

    "Dear Holmes Middle School Families,

This afternoon we had a brief hold in place for our students and staff while we attended to a serious situation with one of our students. A hold in place is part of our safety protocol that keeps students and staff in classrooms and hallways are cleared while the situation is being addressed.

A student voluntarily went to see a support staff member and expressed concerns. The issue of concern was not related to threats toward students, staff or the school. During that meeting, the student turned over a weapon to the staff member; the weapon was a gun. Based upon initial investigation, it was not taken out or shown to anyone, including other students, prior to that time. The weapon was immediately secured and turned over to our BlueLine security officer and LPD was contacted. The police responded to the school and are currently addressing the situation in concert with our LPS and Holmes administration as well as the student and parent.

We are currently investigating and addressing the situation but wanted to get this information out to you as soon as possible. If you or your child are in need of support, it will be made available. Additional school social workers will be on hand during the school day tomorrow and thereafter, if needed, as a resource for our students.

Please know that we understand how very concerning this is for you as a parent and want to assure you that we will continue to give this our full attention and care.

    Sincerely, Roger Opsommer, Principal
Kevin Etue, Director of Secondary Programs
    Andrea Oquist, Superintendent"

It's unclear at this time where the child got the gun, or if it was loaded.

It's also unclear whether the student or anyone else could face charges related to this incident.

The student's age was not released.

The investigation by Livonia Police is ongoing.
