LITTLE FALLS, NJ - The Township of Little Falls has introduced an ordinance with the goal of establishing a designated pedestrian mall in the heart of the town. Pedestrian malls are car-free zones within urban areas, fostering safer and more pleasant environments for walking, shopping, and socializing, often adorned with wider sidewalks, benches, greenery, and occasionally outdoor cafés, to enhance the overall pedestrian experience.

The streets affected will be Warren Street, from its intersection with Stevens Avenue to Center Avenue, (“Warren Street Plaza”). This area will be closed to most vehicular traffic to prioritize pedestrian use. While vehicular access to the designated streets will be restricted, provisions will be made for emergency, public works, maintenance, and service vehicles to ensure essential services can still be provided.

This restriction aims to alleviate traffic congestion, enhance the use of these streets for pedestrian purposes, and ultimately benefit both the township and adjacent properties.

The measure comes after the Township recognized that existing traffic congestion posed a hazard to pedestrian safety. If approved, this will allow for the Township to narrow any roadway to be kept and maintained in connection with any pedestrian mall.

There are still details to be ironed out regarding the pedestrian Plaza, but the intentions behind it are multifaceted. Safety enhancements for school children who frequent the area daily are a primary concern, Mayor James Damiano told TAPinto Passaic Valley.

“The other is an area near our downtown where an outdoor space could be utilized for events such as our farmers market,” Damiano said. “This would be a better location for events such as this and many others. It is also located between our library, the old municipal building, and the Civic Center, a great place for gatherings.”
