The don’t say illegal alien policy

Under no circumstances should any white person say the N-word. It has been communicated to everyone that, for historically understandable reasons, that word is per se offensive when uttered by anyone who is not black.

But what about the term “illegal alien”?

According to Central Davidson High School in Lexington, North Carolina, the I-word is now every bit as verboten as the N-word.

Earlier this month, an English teacher at Central Davidson High School gave her class a vocabulary assignment that included the word “alien.” One boy in the class, seeking clarification, asked the teacher, “Like space aliens or illegal aliens without green cards?”

At this point, another boy in the class took offense and threatened to fight the boy who had asked the question. An assistant principal was then summoned. Instead of punishing the boy who disrupted the class with threats of physical violence, the school instead suspended the boy who asked the question for three days.

“I didn’t make a statement directed towards anyone; I asked a question,” the suspended student told the Carolina Journal. “I wasn’t speaking of Hispanics because everyone from other countries needs green cards, and the term ‘illegal alien’ is an actual term that I hear on the news and can find in the dictionary.”

The boy has since served the suspension but is now seeking to have the punishment removed from his record. Despite the involvement of an attorney and a state senator, so far the school isn’t budging. “I do not see that that would be an offensive statement, just in getting clarification,” state Sen. Steve Jarvis told reporters.

Maybe there is some history with that phrase at that school that we are unaware of. But “alien” is a legal term used in federal law to refer to any person who is not a citizen of this country. Aliens can be legally present in this country (most are!) or illegally present. These are just facts. People, especially students, shouldn’t be punished for using these common terms.
