Union County library events for May

16 days agoUnion County, Pa. — The Union County Library System, which includes the Public Library for Union County in Lewisburg, Herr Memorial Library in Mifflinburg, and West End Library in Laurelton, is hosting the following events in May.

Adult/Teen Programs
• Mah Jongg Club
Tuesdays: 1-3:30 p.m.
Anyone interested in playing the American version of the ancient Chinese tile game are welcome to socialize and play.
• English as a Second Language
Monday, May 6, 13, and 20: 12:30-2 p.m.
Jeanne Crago, ESL Instructor from the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit, will help students of any language background with conversation, pronunciation, reading, and writing skills in English. Students of all levels are welcome.
• Introduction to the Basics of Spanish
Thursday May 30: 6-7 p.m.
Led by experienced educator Linda Kander, these sessions will provide opportunities to learn and practice vocabulary for everyday use and travel, beginning with basic conversational phrases for meeting, greeting, and general information. Join fellow book lovers every second Monday of the month to discuss all things books! Each meeting the group will pick a new book to read and discuss.
• Piecemakers Quilt Guild of Susquehanna Valley Lewisburg
Monday, May 20, 10 a.m to 4 p.m.
Join members of the Quilting Guild for a day of quilting, sewing, and needle work. Bring your own materials. Those looking to attend all day are permitted to bring a bagged lunch and are responsible for the clean-up.

• Flora Fyster Poetry Reading
Thursday, May 2: 6:30-8 p.m.
Join Flora Eyster, a poet and graduate of Bard College, as she shares poems from her new CD "Ave: 51 Poems with Riffs Messing with Maria." The featured poems are adorned by original sounds and piano from Flora’s years of composing and collecting acoustic sounds.

Celebrate Memorial Day with some patriotic fun! Stop by the Library to pick up supplies to make red, white, and blue stars. First come, first serve, while supplies last.

Do you absolutely love books and reading? Then come join other teen readers as we discuss some of our favorite books and genres!
• Embark Book Club: Feed the Mind, Nourish the Soul
Tuesday, May 21: 16-7 p.m.
Join Yoga Therapist Dawn Shawley and others for enriching conversations based on yoga-related and other inspirational books to deepen self-understanding and to live intentionally and well. Each meeting will open with a few minutes of grounding, breath awareness, and may include light movement, to be followed by discussion. This month's book discussion will be "Rooted: Life at the Crossroads of Science, Nature, and Spirit" by Lyanda Lynn Haupt.
Feel free to try the practices and bring questions or reflections! Participants are responsible for getting their own copy via the library or purchase. Prior reading of the book is not required but is preferred. Hot tea will be provided and participants must bring their own travel mug or thermos.

Friday, May 3, 10, and 17: 11-11:30 a.m.
A storytime based on the “Mother Goose on the Loose” program, which shows that children learn best through routine and repetition in a nurturing environment. Learn songs, rhymes, fingerplays, and simple ASL signs. For ages 0-2.
• Toddler Storytime
Wednesday, May 1, 8, and 15: 9:30-10 a.m.
Join for an in-person storytime with books, songs, rhymes, finger plays, and simple ASL signs. For ages 1-2.
• Preschool Storytime
Tuesday, May 7 and 14: 10-11 a.m.
Join Miss Alicia to sing songs, read books, and learn some simple ASL signs centered around a different theme each week. For ages 3-5.
• National Fitness Day
Saturday, may 4: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Come to the Exploratorium and take apart some old electronics! Use the provided tools and explore the world inside. Ages 7 to 12, no registration required.
• Culture and Cuisine Cinco de Mayo Celebration
Monday, May 6: 4-6 p.m.
Cinco de Mayo celebrates Mexican American culture. Join in games, stories, music, and making tacos. For ages 6-12.

Join a weekly story time with Ms. Sheila for children 2-5 years of age and their parent/caregivers. Crafts, games, and hands-on activities are provided to reinforce the theme and engage the children in creative play and learning.

Mah Jongg is a game of skill, strategy, and calculation and involves a degree of chance. No experience is needed. An instructor is on hand to teach newcomers this tile-based game.

Connect with fellow book lovers as they discuss "The Lions of Fifth Avenue" by Fiona Davis. Each month our group will select and discuss a new book.

Learn to crochet! Bring your own size 7, 8, or 9 crochet hook. We have a good supply of yarn at the Library. If you want to bring your own yarn, please make sure it is 4-ply knitting worsted in solid color. For ages 8-adult. Class size is limited.
Children's Programs
• Craft of the Month — Grogu (the child) Stick Puppet
Month of May: During library hours
Children may pick up a take-home kit to make a Grogu stick puppet. A glue stick or school glue is needed to assemble the puppet. For ages 3-12. One kit per child, supplies are limited.
• Preschool Story and Activity Time!
Tuesdays, 10:30-11:30 a.m.
Join us each week for our in-person storytime that includes a weekly theme with read-aloud stories, age-appropriate activities and crafts, musical instruments and songs. Adults are offered a take-home paper with theme-related crafts, rhymes, snacks, and suggested getting ready for kindergarten activities. For children up to age 5 along with a parent/caregiver. Parents must stay with children during class.
• Reading with Maverick
Saturday, May 25: 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Children can read their favorite books to our certified therapy dog, Maverick. One child is allowed at a time. To sign up for a 15-minute time slot, call the library at 570-922-4773.
