Lewisburg, Pa. — Lewisburg Neighborhoods has organized a litter pick-up event in honor of Earth Day 2024.

The event is scheduled to take place on April 21 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Hufnagle Park in downtown Lewisburg.

Taylor Lightman, the director of Lewisburg Neighborhoods, expressed hope for community participation in cleaning up the Bull Run & Downtown neighborhoods.

Gloves and grabbers will be provided for volunteers who need them. Lucie Gosson-Roy, a local high school junior, is actively involved in organizing the event to promote environmental awareness and encourage a reduction in single-use plastic consumption to prevent litter.

“We should not be used to seeing litter everywhere — this is not normal and it’s not good. We should do our best to clean it up but also ensure that we reduce our use of single-use plastics so that we prevent litter in the first place," said Gosson-Roy.

Snacks, water, and sunscreen will be available for volunteers. Lewisburg Neighborhoods, established in 2006, focuses on enhancing the safety, livability, and walkability of Lewisburg through activities such as grant writing, policy reform, and programming.

Their initiatives have secured over $4 million in grant funding for projects like the Bull Run Greenway and streetscape improvements.

Collaborating with the Bucknell University Center for Sustainability and the Environment and the PA Department of Environmental Protection, Lewisburg Neighborhoods took the lead in developing Lewisburg's draft Climate Action Plan.

The organization has also formed a housing task force to recommend policy changes that promote infill development and is actively involved in various year-round programs, including tree plantings, litter pickups, and community bicycle rides, among others.
