Fast-food chain has closed two Johnson County restaurants. More remain open

Arby’s has shut down two of its restaurants in Johnson County, leaving a suburb with just one location remaining. Two Arby’s restaurants in Olathe have closed: 13790 S. Black Bob Road and 18615 W. 151st St. Signs direct customers to the remaining Olathe spot: 18060 W. 119th St. Arby’s has yanked the addresses of both closed locations from its website. The Star contacted Arby’s parent company, Inspire Brands, for comment. The company did not respond Wednesday. Flynn Group, a popular franchisee with dozens of Kansas locations, also did not respond. There does not appear to be any other affected locations. Managers at several different Johnson County locations said they had not been alerted of a closure. About 14 Arby’s locations remain in the metro. Spots in Johnson County include: 15021 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park, 9525 Santa Fe Drive in Overland Park and 11445 W. 63rd St. in Shawnee. No national closings have been reported this month, but late last year, Arby’s quietly closed dozens of locations after sales dropped by more than 6%, according to reporting from TheStreet. Arby’s has been serving roast-beef sandwiches, curly fries and shakes since its inception in 1964.

Kansas Is Home To A Massive Christmas Warehouse That Makes Holiday Shopping Magical

More than 40 kinds of poinsettias fill one holiday shop, and some of them aren’t red or white at all. That alone made me look twice. The same place has been spraying fake snow onto real trees since 1964. Every winter, the greenhouses glow with twinkle lights from floor...

Paul Rudd, Overland Park get a shout-out when CNN announces Adam Hamilton victory

Welp, we did not have “Paul Rudd” on our election night bingo card. But the “Ant-Man” actor scored a surprise shout-out as Jake Tapper on CNN announced that Adam Hamilton defeated Kansas Senator Roger Marshall in a shocking win Tuesday. Tapper threw the live coverage to Hamilton headquarters in Overland Park, “the home of Paul Rudd,” he said. Rudd, born in New Jersey, spent much of his childhood in Johnson County then studied theater at the University of Kansas. And Tapper would know that because the CNN anchor is a regular celebrity guest at Big Slick, the annual Children’s Mercy fundraiser that Rudd co-hosts. In October, Rudd co-hosted a get-out-the-vote event in New York with “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The event raised money for Latino Victory Project and Onward Together , nonprofit groups that work on voter mobilization and getting people involved in the political process. Jimmy Fallon, Adam Scott and Rita Wilson were among the celebrities who participated.

Chick-fil-A opens at 6:30 a.m. Thursday at 9330 E. 350 Highway. Raytown’s first-ever Chick-fil-A will host a “moove-in” party on day one, offering guests who show up in cow-spotted clothing or accessories a free entrée or kid’s meal. His experience with Chick-fil-A dates back to 2010, when he was in college in Illinois and started working at a location there. He has lived in the Kansas City area for multiple years.

Where to hear live jazz in Kansas City, from 18th & Vine to Waldo

For nearly three decades, Kansas City native Chalis O’Neal has been playing trumpet, performing at jazz venues throughout the metro and contributing to the city’s longstanding musical tradition. From Vine Street Brewing Co. in the historic 18th & Vine Jazz District to Stock Hill and Lonnie’s Reno Club, O’Neal has performed at establishments offering audiences different ways to experience Kansas City’s jazz scene. He also recommends the Blue Room and Ted’s Taproom, which he describes as a newer destination for live jazz, food and drinks. Although Kansas City has a number of established jazz clubs, O’Neal says the music extends well beyond traditional performance venues, with restaurants, breweries and neighborhood bars regularly featuring local musicians. “Kansas City has a great jazz scene,” O’Neal said. “I believe I heard there’s over 50 venues around town, not necessarily jazz clubs, but 50 venues that offer jazz.” Vine Street Brewing Co. On Wednesday evenings, the upstairs taproom at Vine Street Brewing Co. becomes a gathering place for some of Kansas City’s jazz musicians, who come together to improvise, exchange ideas and create music in real time. The weekly jam session, known as “Office Hours,” is led by Kansas City trombonist Marcus Lewis and

Everything you need to know about Molcajete's rebrand to El Sabor Perfecto 2

In early August, Molcajete’s, a Mexican restaurant on Massachusetts Street, temporarily closed before reopening in October with a new name: El Sabor Perfecto 2. According to night manager Ashley Ventura, the business changed its name to avoid customer confusion with El Molcajete, another Mexican restaurant in Ottawa. OPINION: We need more movies like "Wild Horse Nine"

The op-ed below does not necessarily reflect the views of the University Daily Kansan and its members. This review contains mild spoilers. “Wild Horse Nine” is the latest film from writer and director Martin McDonagh. Heading into awards season, it is sure to leave a strong impression on voters, especially in the cinematography and acting categories. His previous two films, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and “The Banshees of Inisherin,” were both nominated for over 6 Oscars in their respective years.

Johnson County's newest bakery, coffee shop offers international flavors

Abeer Jari is on the balls of her feet this early Monday afternoon, scurrying between the kitchen and the front register. She works through a line of three customers, one of whom said they decided to stop by after seeing a post on Instagram. She plops a meat-filled farmoza pastry on a plate and ships off a date bar. There aren’t many baked goods left at this point. Her inventory doesn’t make it until the end of the day. “So far, everything has sold out, and I’m happy for it,” she explained. Her new shop, Levant Bakery & Cafe, serves Middle Eastern cuisine from the Levant region, as well as items from beyond. It opened quietly over a week ago at 6518 Martway St. in Mission, but it plans a more official launch this weekend. Its walls are covered in antique frames and dark green paint. A large window is framed by checkered curtains, and a wall of mirrors covers one side of the bakery. The style is — some might say — grandma-chic. For Jari, the shop is a bit of a passion project. “I’ve always loved to bake,” Jari said. “Now I’m coming back to my dream.” She’s
