🐒Shocked by the monkey, hey hey

    📺Happy Throwback Thursday!

Here's a #tbt tidbit from my hometown, where as a bored teen new waver in what was then a beach town (where, to my mind, hardly anything happened) I thought this bit of news trivia was so apt: This week, 59 years ago, on May 6, 1965, the Rolling Stones headlined the Jack Russell Stadium Clearwater and wrote the "Satisfaction" riff

According to the Florida History Network, "a show-stopping "near-riot," creation of the famous "Satisfaction" guitar riff, and discovery of a lost set of photos decades later moves the Rolling Stones' 1965 Clearwater appearance into the annals of rock and roll history."

Tour boat commandeer Col. S. Tooey began his operation with just six rhesus macaques on a small island that's now part of Silver Springs State Park . His motive, according to the Springs in Florida blog and other historians, was to create an attraction that resembled Tarzan's jungle.

The colonel didn't anticipate that the primates happen to be nimble swimmers. They escaped the premises within minutes of his releasing them, and replacement monkeys followed suit. By the early 1980s, the monkeys had already spread across what now is the 5,000-acre park, and, apparently, beyond the tranquil oasis in Marion County.

Fast-forward to April 26, 2024, South Lake County caterer Naxel Miranda, owner of Miranda's Kitchen , was among the residents in and around Groveland, of all places, who reported sightings of a Rhesus Macaque wandering the streets.

"I was picking up my daughter from school at South Lake High School in Groveland and then I saw this animal walking in the sidewalk," the caterer and dad said.

May is National Historic Preservation Month , a time to recognize the importance of preserving historic resources and their significance to local communities .

🐶 Dog-gone it: South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem recently made history, doubling down on her justification of killing a puppy in a book while Trump is silent on the issue . The potential GOP VP candidate is going to be at a book signing in the Villages on May 13 .

It's gonna be a hot one: The Weather Channel tells us to expect a high of 93 degrees and partly cloudy skies.

    🥔This week in Leesburg history

As with other cities and towns throughout Florida, Leesburg observed "Potato and Wheatless Week" the first week of May 1918. Citizens were consuming potatoes instead of wheat to conserve supplies so wheat products could be sent to U.S. forces in France. Also in May 1918, the hum of an airship was heard over Leesburg by Louise Moody, proprietor of the LakeView Hotel and Ellen Hunter. (Source: FranMuse.com)
