Marion County leaders reflect on emergency response following farm worker bus crash

Body discovered believed to be a missing person from Florida
A body has been located just outside of Bulloch County, GA in Jenkins County, near the location of where a missing Florida's woman's car was located on Easter. According to Jenkins County Sheriff Robert Oblesby, a body was located off of Big Pine Road on Wednesday night May 15, 2024, in an abandoned home off in the woods. The home was located near where the car of Colleen Paulissen Pool from Citrus, Florida was located. Jenkins County Coroner Henry Young confirmed that her body has been transported to the GBI Crime Lab in Atlanta for positive identification. Coroner Young has notified Pool's family of this discovery. Pool was last reported missing by the Citrus County Sheriff's Office on February 24, 2024. She was last seen on February 8, 2024. Pool's grey Honda Civic was discovered abandoned in a wooded area off of Big Pine Road on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2024. Rainbow River cleanup draws crowd
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office dive team gave an electrifying performance at the 40th annual Rainbow River Cleanup held May 18 in Dunnellon. Sgt. Todd Winkler said the team of seven divers and a boat operator dredged up an estimated 100 pounds of junk and trash, including an oar and cans, during 3 1/2 hours in the water. The team also snagged this year’s award for removing the “Most Harmful” item from the river: a full-size car battery.
When a bus without seat belts met a dangerous driver, Florida farmworkers paid the price
GAINESVILLE — The farmworkers packed into the white bus by the dozen. In the early morning darkness, they rode along a rural highway, winding through horse country on their way to the watermelon fields of Dunnellon. Air whipped through open windows, while the noisy engine rattled. The workers ate breakfast, drifted to sleep and chatted in Spanish as their hourlong commute neared its end.
