Starting September 30, 2024, a uniform rule concerning "business arrangements" for rent payments will be applied, expanding a previously limited exception to all states.

The Denver City Council will consider spending $24 million for security services at the city’s homeless hotels and micro-communities. The Finance and Governance Committee will review the contracts on Tuesday. Initially Securitas Security Services U.S. received an $18 million to provide security at the sites. But as the city’s security needs became more acute, Securitas could not keep up, according to a memo from city staff to the council. Advanced Professional Security initially received a contract of $400,000, but the city has added $3 million to it. Aquila Services Corp., doing business as Metro Protective Services, also first received a $400,000 contract. That contract has also been extended to $3.4 million.

It came in 15th from among more than 400 cities analyzed for problems with the blood suckers by the website Pest Gnome. The site crunched numbers regarding population density, number of multi-unit buildings and access to exterminators. From among the more than 400 cities ranked, Denver landed at 22nd for the number of accommodations, ninth for the average monthly Google searches for bed bug-related keywords during the past year, and 131st for population density.

A few days ago, I watched an online seminar given by the National Alliance to End Homelessness. The topic was “Targeted homelessness prevention: Stemming the inflow.”. Kay Moshier McDivitt of the Alliance referred to targeted prevention as turning off the faucet of people experiencing homelessness. The problem, she said, is that no matter how fast homeless services agencies house someone, new homeless people keep pouring from the faucet. If you envision the faucet filling a bathtub, soon the tub overflows, leaving many people experiencing homelessness unhoused.
