The calm after the election storm

The election has come and gone – citizens cast their votes, nearly all ballots have been counted and winners and losers have acknowledged who will be making decisions at the public level for the next several years. Southern Maryland News editorial staff worked tirelessly in the months leading up to Tuesday's election to provide information to voters about local candidates, from commissioners and school boards to state delegates and senators, in Calvert, Charles and St. Mary's counties. On Election Day, our staff writers were out talking to voters, taking pictures and capturing the general mood of the day. By about 11 p.m. that night we had stories and graphics ( www.somdnews.com/news/elections/results ) on our website with results. The next day we called candidates and examined the results a little deeper, writing stories for today's print edition of Southern Maryland News. Pick up a copy on a local newsstand or check out those stories and more in our newsletter below. For those that enjoy video, our Riley Dauber appeared on a midterm election roundtable with some of our colleagues at a sister paper in Montana. You can check that out on YouTube by clicking this link: youtube.com/marylandmidterm . As always, thank

NRA-ILA: Election Results Put Second Amendment Rights Under Immediate Threat

FAIRFAX, VA — NRA Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA) Executive Director John Commerford issued the following statement in response to last night's election results:. "Last night's results put progressive majorities in control of Congress and additional state houses across the country, leaving the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Americans under direct and immediate threat. The NRA is ready to stand and fight in Congress, the courts, and in every state where those rights are at risk. This is not the time to sit idly by and lick our wounds—it's the time to stand up, engage, organize, and join the fight to protect the Second Amendment. The only way we stop this radical gun-grabbing agenda is if gun owners get activated to defend their rights and work tirelessly to elect pro-gun politicians in 2028."

Charles planning commission pushes back on subdivision amendment

Residents at a recent Charles planning commission meeting were concerned about how an amendment to the county’s subdivision regulations would affect Falcon Ridge, a housing development along Mason Spring Road in Indian Head. “Development regulations should balance the interest of property owners and developers with the long-term interests of the community,” Christine Cline of Indian Head said at the Nov. 2 meeting. “Charles County should be encouraging responsible development.” The subdivision plan for Falcon Ridge, which has been under development for almost 30 years, is going through an appeals process with the Charles board of appeals. A meeting is scheduled for January 2027. The planning commission recommended denial of the subdivision amendment and asked K. Hovnanian Homes of Maryland, the applicant that proposed the amendment, to add more accountability measures and remove the retroactive provision for projects that have a preliminary plan as of Jan. 1, 2026, including Falcon Ridge. The recommendation moves to the Charles County commissioners. Planning board members Semia Hackett and Jeffrey Bossart expressed concerns about the lack of accountability and oversight in the amendment, and most board members were concerned about the retroactive provision. “It’s becoming ever more challenging to find available areas to develop,” Erin

VDOT studying around-the-clock, two-way Express Lanes on I-95

The Virginia Department of Transportation is exploring adding bi-directional, around-the-clock express lanes for approximately 45 miles of Interstate 95 in Northern Virginia. The Prince William Board of County Supervisors on Oct. 20 received an informational presentation from the department on the feasibility of converting the I-95 reversible express lanes to bi-directional operations. The express lanes currently operate in one direction at a time, with the direction changing based on established weekday and weekend schedules; drivers traveling in the opposite direction cannot access the express lanes. The proposed bi-directional configuration would allow express lane travel in both directions at all times. The proposed project, led by the Virginia Department of Transportation, is still in the feasibility stage, according to a county news release. Feasibility has not yet been determined because potential property, traffic, road configuration, ingress and egress and environmental impacts require further study, the release states. The schedule and construction timeline also remain uncertain, pending the results of the study, necessary approvals and a commercial agreement. The examination is evaluating approximately 45 miles of the I-95 Express Lanes from near the Springfield Interchange in Fairfax County to Spotsylvania County. Under the concept presented to the board, three express lanes would
