A recent wave of restaurant closings has settled as 2026 rolls on, and Knoxville has started seeing new concepts pop up across town. A viral mac and cheese restaurant is coming to Kern's Food Hall , while a Cuban bakery is expanding further west from Bearden to Cedar Bluff. The bakery will be just a few blocks away from one of Knoxville's favorite places for bagels , while a popular South Knoxville spot for pies is hitting the road for a Happy Holler pop-up later this month. La Michoacana Delights mixes ice cream, Mexican food | Grub Scout
There are quite a few East Tennessee ice cream shops doing business under the name “La Michoacana.” But not all of them share the same corporate umbrella. One store operates in Maryville, while another business has stores in Downtown West and Lenoir City. For my latest outing, however, I journeyed to La Michoacana Delights , which made its debut a few years back about a block off North Broadway in Fountain City. The elder Grub Sprout and I stopped in recently for a parent-son dinner and frozen treats, natch. While LMD postures itself primarily as a source of all kinds of ice cream-based goodies, it does offer a limited food menu. Among the options are birria con consume (a soup made with stewed beef), flautas, tocas a la carta and tortas. The last two come with a choice of meat — pollo (chicken), asada (steak), birria and carnitas (pork). Other dishes include chicharrones (made with pork belly) and several nacho-style creations made with Doritos, Cheetos and other assorted -itos. The Tostilocos, for example, features Tostitos served in the bag with various savory toppings. New west Knoxville restaurants move in, classic dining spots gone
It seems to be part of the American cultural psyche, particularly since World War II, to remember nostalgically a fast-food restaurant you frequented as a child or even a teenager after school. Often the building is gone or is now occupied by another restaurant or business, as is the case with several Bearden buildings, but the sentimentality remains. And as old restaurants close, new ones open, and the cycle continues. In the West Hills area of Kingston Pike, a Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen fried chicken restaurant and Hawaiian Bros. Island Grill are soon to open. The Popeyes will be at 7355 Kingston Pike in a former parking area, while the Hawaiian Bros. restaurant will be at 6903 Kingston Pike, where one of the earliest Arby’s in the country once was before the building was razed. A new Arby’s had been built several years ago immediately west of there. Popeyes, which dates to 1972 outside New Orleans under a different name, has several other restaurants in the Knoxville area, while this will be the first Hawaiian Bros. restaurant here.
