'Chef's Kiss' reopens as a new Topeka catering business
A recently closed Topeka restaurant is rebranding and opening as a catering and events business. Chef’s Kiss Ristorante closed Aug. 30 after only a year in business. The restaurant opened August 2025, serving Italian cuisine, wine and cocktails. The building at 1618 SW Washburn Ave. is now for lease. Head chef Kelli Page said personal health issues prompted her to step away from running a full-time restaurant. Page will reopen next month as a catering and events business operating out of The Woodshed Event Center at 1901 N. Kansas Ave. “Chef’s Kiss (Ristorante) was very demanding of my time,” said Page. “There were times I couldn’t be on my feet, and the restaurant really struggled.” She said running a restaurant required her to work six days a week, which impacted her health. “I had to be there," Page said, "and I neglected my health to the point that I was admitted to the hospital.” Page was searching for a commercial kitchen to fulfill catering orders placed before the restaurant closed when another opportunity presented itself. “It started out as me looking for a ghost kitchen I could do some catering out of," she said. Retired teacher opening ‘community chosen' bookstore in south Johnson County
A Kansas City teacher has decided to spend her retirement pursuing her longtime dream of opening a business in south Olathe. Ever since Terrie Morris saw the movie “You’ve Got Mail” featuring Tom Hanks, she’s felt that owning a bookstore is her second calling. “I just love books. I like to read. Being a little ADHD myself, reading can be a challenge, but you know, I love characters, I like kids’ books and I’ve always wanted to own a business, so here I am,” she said. The Reading Garden is scheduled to open on Nov. 17 at 1489 E 151st St. It will be a general bookstore selling titles for all ages, as well as gifts, candles, plants and more. It’s an open space with bookshelves lining the walls, but the organization may be different from what shoppers are used to. Along with shelves organized by genre or age group, Morris will have shelves designated to several nationally recognized book lists and book clubs. “I’m kind of one of those people that likes to go against the grain just because I can, so I did like the Today Show book list, I did Oprah’s book list, and I did Good
