This Unassuming Michigan Steakhouse Serves Old-School Angus Cuts And Serious Ribeyes

One owner hand-cuts somewhere between 1,500 and 2,000 steaks every single week. That is a lot of knife work before anyone even fires up the broiler. The family behind this place learned the craft the old-fashioned way. Their patriarch worked as a broiler man at Detroit’s famous London Chop House back in the 1960s. That kind of training still shows up on a modern dinner plate.

Abdul El-Sayed is for 'shawarma law'. Where to try his favorite, others

Michigan's senator-elect, Abdul El-Sayed, this week joked that he is for "shawarma" not "Sharia" law, when speaking to reporters this week. "Do not believe the people who say I'm for Sharia law, I'm for shawarma law," El-Sayed said at a campaign stop in Macomb County. The joke made light of those who are concerned that El-Sayed, the first Muslim ever elected to the U.S. Senate, will force all Americans to adhere to the religious concepts of Islam, an accusation he has denied. El-Sayed during the conversation then recommended Detroit-area shawarma shop Amo Samis , which operates several locations throughout southeast Michigan. "I want to explain what the tenets of shawarma law are. If you get a shawarma and it's got lettuce in it, it's not shawarma, it's just a sandwich. Someone has lied to you," El-Sayed said on the food. What makes for good shawarma? If you've already tried El-Sayed's favorite, here's a look at five other places to try to the food first created in Turkey. More: El-Sayed calls Vance habibi in victory speech. What does it mean? What is shawarma? Shawarma is a Middle Eastern dish made from thin slices of marinated meat — usually chicken, beef, lamb,

Woman finds 'Navajo Eye Dazzler' rug for $15

Susie Craft’s mother volunteered at the now-closed Bargain Counter in St. Clair Shores for “easily 30 years,” she explained to Dumouchelles’ appraiser James Flannery Jr. at a recent downtown Trash or Treasure appraisal event. She added that the League of Catholic Women ran the thrift shop, and her mother saved the piece — a 3-foot-by-3-foot rug — from the trash after another volunteer deemed it unsellable. On her mother’s advice, the shop ultimately put the piece out for sale, where Susie bought it for $15. “I was a big fan of the shop and would go every weekend,” Craft explained to the appraiser and others gathered for the recent event. “My mom was a seamstress and recognized quality work. They would get amazing things.” The rug has found a long-term home with her. Through the years, it has been used for a variety of purposes, she said, including on the floor, over a coffee table, and more. Craft, who lived in the West for a time, said she already had other Navajo rugs, which is why she purchased this one years ago. “I think they’re gorgeous and love the workmanship.” A friend who is a West Coast designer told her

Troy aquatic center to be closed summer 2027 due to infrastructure issues

Troy will not open its aquatic center for the upcoming summer season because of infrastructure issues, and city officials are evaluating its long-term future, officials said on Nov. 5. In a lengthy post on Facebook, the city said the Troy Family Aquatic Center on Civic Center Drive, just north of Troy's municipal complex, will be closed in summer 2027 "due to significant infrastructure failures that require extensive repairs." The repairs will disrupt the city's ability to operate the facility, the post reads. The aquatic center in summer 2026 experienced "unsustainable" water loss due to multiple failures throughout the facility's aging underground systems. Minimum repairs to this system are estimated at $1 million, according to city officials. “Because repairs can only be done in the summer, the pool will be closed for the 2027 season," said City Manager Frank Nastasi in the post on Facebook. "We will keep evaluating its long-term future, and we hope community partnerships can be part of the solution.” The Troy Family Aquatic Center opened in 1992 and marked its 30th anniversary in 2022. It has a lagoon area, two water slides, and a dedicated toddler and youth area featuring a shallow pool, a 20-foot waterfall, a
