A 93-year-old Polk City man died Tuesday morning after his pickup truck collided with a dump truck that pulled in front of him northeast of Lakeland, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

According to a Sheriff's Office news release, the crash happened about 9:15 a.m. at Moore and Old Polk City roads. Carl Medlin, 93, of Polk City was driving west on Old Polk City Road in a 1970 Ford pickup when a 2000 Sterling dump truck, traveling south on Moore Road, failed to come to a complete stop at a stop sign and pulled onto the road in front of Medlin.

The 60-year-old driver of the dump truck, whom the Sheriff's Office did not immediately identify, was not injured. But Medlin was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. He died about 11:30 a.m.

The Sheriff's Office said both drivers were wearing seat belts, but Medlin's Ford truck was only equipped with a lap belt.

The intersection was closed for about four hours for the investigation, which remains ongoing. The Sheriff's Office said any citations or criminal charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.
