BERKELEY – A way of slowing down large diesel vehicles called “engine braking” or “Jake braking” will be banned on all township roads. A new ordinance would prohibit “the use or operation of any mechanical exhaust device designed to aid in the braking, decompression or deceleration of any motor vehicle which results in the excessive loud, unusual or explosive noise from such vehicle.”

The Toms River Township Council is expected to vote June 26 to enter a shared-services agreement with Ocean County that would let the county run the township's animal shelter. Drunk driving checkpoint on Route 35 in Shrewsbury this weekend
SHREWSBURY - This weekend’s sobriety checkpoint will be set up on Route 35 in the borough, the Monmouth County DWI Task Force announced Wednesday. From 9 p.m. Friday to 1 a.m. Saturday, all southbound motor vehicles on the state highway will be diverted into the Shrewsbury Plaza. Drivers will then be screened to determine if they are intoxicated, said Allenhurst Police Chief Michael Schneider, task force coordinator.
