    Track and field: Lakeside boys set eight conference records, rule Capitol meet

    Lakeside Lutheran's boys track and field team laid waste to the record books.

    The defending Division 2 state team champion Warriors set eight conference records on their way to winning the Capitol Conference Meet at Lake Mills High School on Tuesday, May 14.

    Two weeks after losing by just two points to Lodi during the dual meet season, Lakeside scored 188 points to beat Lodi by 27 for the championship meet crown.

    Junior Ben Krauklis broke his own school record and set a new Capitol Conference record in the 100 meter dash with a winning time of 10.78 seconds.

    Krauklis and senior teammate Alex Reinke finished first and second in the 200 meter dash, respectively, with personal best times of 21.83 and 21.89. The winning time for Krauklis set another conference record.

    Seniors Karsten Grundahl and Daniel Ertman claimed the top two spots in the 400. Grundahl won in a conference record time of 49.21, while Ertman ran a PR time of 49.71.

    Grundahl, the reigning Division 2 state runner-up in the 800, won the half-mile by three seconds in a new conference record time of 1:59.34.

    Senior Cameron Weiland is the new conference record holder in the 1,600 meter run after winning the mile by eight seconds in 4:22.04. Weiland doubled as the 3,200 meter champion, winning the two-mile by nearly 22 seconds in a new conference record time of 9:32.63.

    The 800 relay team of juniors Issiah Sampson and Tyler Dahlie, Krauklis and Reinke won by five seconds in a new conference record time of 1:29.06. The 1,600 relay team of Ertman, Dahlie, Grundahl and Reinke closed the meet in style with one last conference record winning time of 3:25.81.

    The 3,200 relay team of freshman Jack Thiele, sophomore Gavin Dahl, junior Jack Simmons and senior Mark Garcia edged out their Lake Mills counterparts by .24 of a second in 8:32.17.

    The Warriors added six top four finishes to their track totals.

    The 400 relay team of Sampson, junior Josef Rupnow, senior Tyler Tauscheck and sophomore Tyler Schuld placed second in 45.30.

    Garcia was third in the 3,200 in a PR time of 9:57.90. Thiele was third in the 800 in 2:04.43.

    Sampson was fourth in the 100 in a PR time of 11.33. Senior Gideon Ewerdt was fourth in the 1,600 in a PR time of 4:38.19 and also fourth in the 3,200 in 10:10.17.

    Lakeside also piled up points in the field events.

    Dahlie won the high jump at 6 feet, 4 inches and placed second in the triple jump with a PR leap of 44-3 1/4. Junior Nolan Schweighardt won the pole vault with a PR height of 13-0.

    Junior Carson Frisch was third in the high jump (PR 5-10). Sophomore Will Stuebs finished third in the discus with a PR throw of 138-3.

    Lakeside Lutheran's girls also lost narrowly to Lodi in the dual meet, and the Warriors were a close second again at the championship meet. Lodi won the girls title with 132 points while Lakeside was next with 126.

    The Warriors swept all four relay events and earned five first place finishes overall.

    Freshman Hannah Minning won the 3,200 meter run in a PR time of 12:35.14. The 400 relay team of senior Claire Heinrich, junior Cecilia Krahn, freshman Taryn Jobke and sophomore Sophia Rhyner won in 52.88. The 800 relay team of junior Cecilia Krahn, Jobke, Rhyner and junior Ella Schuetz won in 1:49.87.

    The 1,600 relay team of junior Kate Thiele, senior Paige Krahn, junior Mara Minning and freshman Grace Gall won in 4:25.06. The 3,200 relay team of junior Ashley Rosenau, senior Paige Krahn and freshmen Natalie Schultz and Hannah Minning won by 16 seconds in 10:30.44.

    Schuetz was third in the 200 in a PR time of 27.59 and also took third in the high jump (4-8). Gall was fourth in the 400 in a PR time of 1:04.74.

    Senior Brielle Leis was second in the shot put (34-1 1/4). Sophomore Sophia Bostetter was second in the discus with a PR throw of 115-1.

    The Lake Mills boys scored 41.5 points and finished fifth overall.

    Junior Tommy Cassady placed second in the shot put with a PR throw of 51-4 1/2.

    The 3,200 relay team of junior Saul Lopez, sophomore Max Springer, junior Max Kressner and senior Jack Phillips finished a close second in 8:32.41. The 1.600 relay team of Phillips, Springer, freshman Collin Christian and junior Chet Klawitter finished fourth in 3:43.12.

    The Lake Mills girls scored nine points and finished tenth.

    Senior Ava Vesperman placed third in the 800 meter run in a PR time of 2:33.24.

    The L-Cats and Warriors compete in a Division 2 regional at Delavan on Monday.
