MARSHALL — Lily Doerr’s home run in the fifth inning helped highlight the Lake Mills softball team’s 4-2 road victory over Marshall in nonconference action on Monday.

“Lily has always had really good power,” Lake Mills softball coach Jim Clift said. “She’s been very good at picking her pitches. I knew once it left the bat it was going out. Very happy for her.”

The L-Cats (10-0) scored a run in the first when Savannah Radtke led off the game by drawing a walk, took second on Doerr’s sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a ground out by Ava Kleinfeldt.

Emily Wollin opened the Lake Mills third by singling to left. She scored on a two-out single up the middle by Haydenn Sellnow.

The Cardinals (5-3) cut their deficit in half when Kennedy Weisensel hit a first-pitch home run to right with two away in the third.

Doerr took an 0-1 offering from Weisensel over the center-field fence with one away in the fifth for a solo blast. Payton Quest’s two-out single plated Kleinfeldt and made it 4-1.

Marshall scored a run on Sydney Stuntebeck’s sacrifice fly in the fifth but then had a runner picked off at third by Doerr behind the dish for the inning’s second out. Winning pitcher Aubrey Lepak then induced a fly out to end the threat. She turned the ball over to Kleinfeldt, who punched out three over two no-hit frames to earn the save.

Lepak fanned four and walked one, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits.

“Aubrey’s money pitch is her off-speed stuff,” Clift said. “She has a very effective changeup, which in my opinion is her best pitch. She does a good job keeping hitters off balance.

“When you contrast that with Ava, who has a speed a lot of high school hitters aren’t used to seeing, it’s a nice mix. They never caught up to Ava in the sixth and seventh.”

Clift tipped his cap to Sellnow (at shortstop) and Radtke (at third) for their work on the left side of the infield.

“Haydenn played an exceptional defensive game,” Clift said. “Her and Savannah locked down the left side of the infield and prevented Marshall from mounting an offensive threat.”

Weisensel allowed four earned on eight hits in a complete game.

“This was a really good test for us because Weisensel is kind of an up and comer at pitcher who has an effective riseball,” Clift said. “She’s a solid pitcher, especially given that she’s a sophomore.

“We’ve been strong all year at picking our pitches. We didn’t really chase her riseball at all. We put the ball in play and while some of them weren’t pretty hits, we made the defense earn it. We kept fairly steady pressure on them offensively. Aubrey combined with our defense really kept them at bay other than the home run. It was a pretty solid win all the way around.”

Lake Mills hosts Lodi today at 5 p.m. in a matchup of unbeaten Capitol North teams.
