Who makes Birmingham's best burger? Winners revealed

For the second year in a row, diners crowned Terra Kitchen & Cocktails as the winner of Birmingham’s third annual burger competition. It was a close competition, Birmingham Shopping District officials and organizers of the event said. Overall, nearly 10,000 votes came in. Terra Kitchen & Cocktails’ Michigan Reserve burger garnered the highest combined rating and votes from diners, earning the restaurant Birmingham Best Burger title of the third annual event. The eatery’s Michigan Reserve burger is a 45-day house-ground, dry-aged beef blend with cherry wood-smoked pork belly, aged Michigan cheddar, Guernsey buttermilk crispy onions, dressed arugula, savory bourbon cherry jus, Traverse City cherry and a Mammoth Bourbon toasted sesame bun served with steakhouse potato wedges. Randy Foumia, owner of Terra Kitchen & Cocktails, said in a news release that participating was a “fun way to connect with the community and introduce new guests to Terra.” “Winning for the second year in a row speaks to our team's consistency and the incredible support of our guests,” Foumia said. The competition took place from Oct. 1 through Oct. 31. When diners ordered exclusive competition burgers at participating restaurants, they could rate the burger based on presentation, creativity and taste. Diners could

Abdul El-Sayed is for 'shawarma law'. Where to try his favorite, others

Michigan's senator-elect, Abdul El-Sayed, this week joked that he is for "shawarma" not "Sharia" law, when speaking to reporters this week. "Do not believe the people who say I'm for Sharia law, I'm for shawarma law," El-Sayed said at a campaign stop in Macomb County. The joke made light of those who are concerned that El-Sayed, the first Muslim ever elected to the U.S. Senate, will force all Americans to adhere to the religious concepts of Islam, an accusation he has denied. El-Sayed during the conversation then recommended Detroit-area shawarma shop Amo Samis , which operates several locations throughout southeast Michigan. "I want to explain what the tenets of shawarma law are. If you get a shawarma and it's got lettuce in it, it's not shawarma, it's just a sandwich. Someone has lied to you," El-Sayed said on the food. What makes for good shawarma? If you've already tried El-Sayed's favorite, here's a look at five other places to try to the food first created in Turkey. More: El-Sayed calls Vance habibi in victory speech. What does it mean? What is shawarma? Shawarma is a Middle Eastern dish made from thin slices of marinated meat — usually chicken, beef, lamb,

Woman finds 'Navajo Eye Dazzler' rug for $15

Susie Craft’s mother volunteered at the now-closed Bargain Counter in St. Clair Shores for “easily 30 years,” she explained to Dumouchelles’ appraiser James Flannery Jr. at a recent downtown Trash or Treasure appraisal event. She added that the League of Catholic Women ran the thrift shop, and her mother saved the piece — a 3-foot-by-3-foot rug — from the trash after another volunteer deemed it unsellable. On her mother’s advice, the shop ultimately put the piece out for sale, where Susie bought it for $15. “I was a big fan of the shop and would go every weekend,” Craft explained to the appraiser and others gathered for the recent event. “My mom was a seamstress and recognized quality work. They would get amazing things.” The rug has found a long-term home with her. Through the years, it has been used for a variety of purposes, she said, including on the floor, over a coffee table, and more. Craft, who lived in the West for a time, said she already had other Navajo rugs, which is why she purchased this one years ago. “I think they’re gorgeous and love the workmanship.” A friend who is a West Coast designer told her
