First of Cedar Rapids quiet zones could be complete this year
CEDAR RAPIDS — The city of Cedar Rapids this fall will make improvements to several downtown railroad crossings — a key step in completing the first phase of the city’s long-running “quiet zone” project to minimize downtown train noise. The city is currently seeking bids for the improvement of the railroad crossings along Fourth Street East at its intersections with First, Second and Third avenues. Construction on the estimated $290,000 project will begin in August and run through October. The project will replace pavement panels approaching the crossings, as well as drainage improvements at and between each intersection. Simultaneously, Union Pacific Railroad will replace the railway crossing panels, making for a smoother driving experience. The city will collaborate with the Iowa Department of Transportation on the project, and work is already underway to identify how best to minimize impacts to the Downtown Farmers Market and other similar festivities. Additional work is planned for the railroad crossing at Stickle Drive near Cedar Lake, where the city has replaced the surrounding pavement and posted improved signage. The city now is working with CN Railroad for further improvements such as new crossing signals and gates, which staff hope to see installed in September.
