Alpena fireworks display still on target to entertain the community
ALPENA, Mich. - Kicking off the 4th of July holiday weekend in Alpena, plans are still in place to put on a spectacular fireworks display. Despite rain throughout the week, the planning committee has been putting in the hours to keep the tradition going. Earlier in the week, the Alpena Chamber was a few thousand dollars short of its fundraising goal. On Wednesday, they hosted a drive-thru fundraiser outside the Chamber office. They stood out in the pouring rain to collect donations and it worked. By the end of the day on Wednesday, they hit their fundraising goal. Looking ahead to the big show on Friday night, eyes are focused on the forecast. There's a chance of storms during the day, but hopes are to still send off the rockets around 9:30 p.m. near the end of the Blair St. Pier. You can get your latest forecast information here. If Mother Nature does not cooperate, the backup date for the display is on July 5. Parking maps and other information are available here . COPYRIGHT 2026 BY WBKB 11. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. Beyond the Shore podcast uncovers the hidden world of the Great Lakes
You're most likely to find NPR's Don Gonyea on the road, in some battleground state looking for voters to sit with him at the local lunch spot, the VFW or union hall, at a campaign rally, or at their kitchen tables to tell him what's on their minds. Through countless such conversations over the course of the year, he gets a ground-level view of American elections. Gonyea is NPR's National Political Correspondent, a position he has held since 2010. His reports can be heard on all NPR News programs and at NPR.org. To hear his sound-rich stories is akin to riding in the passenger seat of his rental car, traveling through Iowa or South Carolina or Michigan or wherever, right along with him.

Friends of Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary wins $15,000 economic contributor award
ALPENA, Mich. — Friends of Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary has received the Outstanding Contributor Award from the Economic Generator Network, earning recognition — and a $15,000 cash prize — for its work in education, workforce development, and economic growth across Northern Michigan. The Economic Generator Network presents the award annually to an individual, group, or organization that has made significant contributions to building the foundation for economic growth in Northern Michigan. The $15,000 prize is unrestricted and may be used at the recipient's discretion. Since 2010, Friends of Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary has developed a nationally recognized model for connecting youth and communities to the Great Lakes through marine technology and stewardship programs. Working alongside Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, the organization has engaged students through hands-on learning in remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), engineering, robotics, and environmental science. "The Friends of Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary exemplifies what the Outstanding Contributor Award stands for," Economic Generator Network representatives said. "Their programs inspire young people and strengthen stewardship of the Great Lakes, but also directly contribute to workforce development and regional economic success."
