Alpena officials share reminders for yard signs before the November election
ALPENA — As the November 3 election approaches, the City of Alpena is reminding residents and businesses about temporary signage regulations that govern where signs can be placed and how large they can be. The regulations apply to all temporary signs displayed throughout the city, with specific rules for residential and non-residential districts. Understanding these guidelines now can help property owners avoid having their signs removed and ensure compliance with city ordinances. Placement Requirements Temporary signs must follow strict placement rules to maintain the city's appearance and safety standards. Signs cannot be located in the tree lawn, which is part of the city right-of-way. All signs must be set back at least two feet from the property line. The city takes placement violations seriously. If City staff removes a sign from the right-of-way, property owners can collect it at City Hall within 14 days of removal. Signs also cannot be affixed to trees, rocks, shrubs, utility poles, fences, or other similar objects. Additionally, signs cannot be attached to stationary motor vehicles or other objects not typically used for signage purposes. Flag Regulations The City of Alpena does not regulate or issue enforcement actions on flags displayed on flag poles or
