Gaylord football meets its match against Mount Pleasant, wraps season in district finals
MOUNT PLEASANT ― For the first 10 games of the Gaylord football season, no team had been able to fully put the Blue Devils away. Many had knocked them down; the Blue Devils trailed by three scores in Week 8 vs. St. Johns and by two scores last week in the district semifinals vs. Marquette. Time and again, Gaylord picked themselves up off the mat to come away victorious, entering the Division 3 district finals with an unbeaten record and the confidence to beat anyone. Well, maybe not anyone. The No. 2 Mount Pleasant Oilers (11-0) dominated from start to finish against Gaylord (10-1), finishing off a 42-0 victory and bringing an end to the Blue Devils' magical season. "We watched the film, and Mount Pleasant is certainly a great football team," said coach Matt Silsbury. "We lost to a really great team, and I'm still so proud of our guys. We had a great season, built a great foundation here and made a lot of great memories." Trouble at the line of scrimmage Week after week, the Blue Devils leaned on their offensive and defensive lines, opening up big holes for their backs throughout the season while making it

Questions, what to watch for with Cheboygan-area XC teams at Saturday's regionals
Regionals have arrived for cross country teams in Michigan . Four Cheboygan-area teams – Cheboygan, Inland Lakes, Mackinaw City and Onaway – will all be competing at the same venue in Mancelona, as the Chiefs will run in Division 3, while the Bulldogs, Comets and Cardinals race in Division 4. Which teams can make a run at states? As far as area teams go, I believe there’s two squads who have a reasonable chance to qualify for the state finals, which will be held at Michigan International Speedway on Saturday, Nov. 1. First, the Mackinaw City boys have the best chance because they’re the deepest of the bunch. Led by seniors Braylon Currie and Ben Strittmatter, as well as a young star in freshman Knox Wilson, the Northern Lakes Conference champion Comets have

No. 1 Inland Lakes rides second half surge to fifth-straight Ski Valley Conference title
GAYLORD ― For the first 24 minutes of the Week 9 matchup between No. 1 Inland Lakes and No. 10 Gaylord St. Mary, things seemed to be going the Snowbirds' way. After scoring first, the GSM defense held the usually explosive Bulldogs in check, going into halftime with just an 8-6 deficit and a ton of confidence. Whatever happened in the Inland Lakes locker room, it shifted the next 24 minutes decisively in their favor. After trailing 6-0, Inland Lakes (9-0, 4-0 Ski Valley) rattled off 34 unanswered points before rolling to a 47-20 victory, securing the program's fifth consecutive Ski Valley Conference title while wrapping an undefeated regular season. "We didn't adjust anything. A lot of what we were doing was close and we just needed to actually focus on the little things and make them work," said coach Travis Meyer. Gaylord football caps off second undefeated season in three years with win over Sault
SAULT STE. MARIE ― The last time the Gaylord Blue Devils football team visited Sault Ste. Marie, the Blue Devils capped off the 2023 regular season with a 20-8 victory, finishing at 9-0 for the first time since 2002 . Since that day, the GHS program has been through a lot. GHS followed up that historic 2023 season with a 3-6 record in 2024, missing the playoffs while dealing with a litany of issues. The school would part ways with head coach DJ Szymoniak in the offseason, leaving his former assistant Matt Silsbury to take over in late May. Despite the short turnaround time and the perceived trajectory of the team, Silsbury inherited a group hungry to put 2024 behind them and make 2025 another historic year for the program. That group had an opportunity to bring things full circle on Friday, Oct. 24, traveling to the Sault for a chance to complete an unbeaten season on the same field that the 2023 team achieved that same milestone. Gaylord (9-0, 6-0 Big North) played maybe its most complete game of the 2025 season, running past Sault (0-9, 0-6 BNC) 35-0 to secure the program's second undefeated regular season in three

From Northern Michigan to Hawaii, the dynamic duo leading Gaylord's turnaround in 2025
GAYLORD ― Kelsen Snyder grew up surfing the beaches in Hawaii, while Kaven Cole spent his childhood in the chilly winters of Northern Michigan. Despite the difference in upbringings, their paths led them to the same place: the Gaylord football backfield. Running back Kaven Cole is a Gaylord native, while quarterback Kelsen Snyder was born and raised on the island of Maui in Hawaii, the complete opposite of Northern Michigan in a plethora of ways. Thankfully for the Blue Devils football program, their stories have converged at GHS, where the senior duo is leading the backfield as QB1 and RB1. Football playoffs: MHSAA high school football playoffs announced, where northern Michigan teams are heading Volleyball playoffs: See the district pairings for Gaylord, St. Mary and Johannesburg-Lewiston volleyball Snyder and Cole have been instrumental in the football team's turnaround this season, going from 3-6 in 2024 to undefeated and playoff-bound in 2025, and both are having individual seasons to remember while helping first-year head coach Matt Silsbury lead GHS to the program's sixth undefeated regular season since 1950. They may have gone on staunchly different paths to get here, but the dynamic duo they've formed has elevated GHS to among the

From down 21-0 to 8-0, Gaylord football just one win away from another undefeated season
GAYLORD ― Through the first 22 minutes of Gaylord football's Week 8 matchup with St. Johns, almost nothing had gone the GHS's way. Penalties, fumbles and plenty of frustrating drives on offense were being met by a dominant running game from the visiting Red Wings. It was 21-0 before the Blue Devils knew it, and it looked like their undefeated record was in serious jeopardy. Then, a score before halftime changed the momentum of the game in Gaylord's favor. Starting from their own 35-yard line with less than 30 seconds remaining in the second quarter, GHS's Kelsen Snyder completed a 38-yard pass to Landon Wolf before connecting with Grayson Glazier for a 32-yard touchdown pass, sending the Blue Devils into halftime with a 21-7 deficit and, more importantly, hope for a comeback on the other side of the break. They used that hope, and a much cleaner second half, to complete the 21-point comeback and claim a 32-28 victory, staying unbeaten with one regular season game left to play. Splan, Schmoldt help Onaway outlast Pellston in Thursday night football thriller
PELLSTON – Just a couple of football teams trying to finish the season strong . Here’s some takeaways from the game. Powerful duo inspires Onaway running game The Cardinals (3-5, 3-3 Ski Valley) have relied heavily on a solid running game throughout their campaign, but perhaps Thursday was their best performance of the season. Spearheading Onaway’s lethal rushing attack were senior quarterback Lelin Splan and junior fullback Zach Schmoldt, who had success against Pellston’s defense throughout the evening. Splan’s excellent night included three rushing touchdowns and a fumble recovery for a TD as well, while Schmoldt’s powerful running was rewarded with a pair of scores. While Splan provided more speed in Onaway’s running game, Schmoldt was the thumping bruiser who was hard to bring down all night. Together, they complimented each other nicely, and

No. 9 Gaylord St. Mary runs past Holton, sets up marquee matchup with Inland Lakes
GAYLORD ― The regular season has been a slow-building process for No. 9 Gaylord St. Mary , trying to keep a young roster engaged and healthy as the Snowbirds made their way through a relatively easy schedule. Still, each week was a learning experience as they worked through miscues, turnovers and penalties through seven weeks. Their Week 8 performance, a 44-0 victory over Holton on Oct. 18, may have been their cleanest and most efficient yet as they ran away with an easy win No. 7, setting them up for a big matchup with the top-ranked team in 8-player Division 1, Inland Lakes, next week.
