Educators share how to keep kids engaged during summer break
CANTON, Mo. (WGEM) - Summer is here and many kids face the new challenge of having a lot of free time. Local counselors said it can be difficult for students to adjust. Canton R-V School District Counselor Ashley Knapp said the structure of the school schedule impacts children positively. She said in addition to learning, going to school every day helps students socially. Especially at schools that offer social-emotional learning.
Jackson-Lincoln Swimming Complex set for splashy opening on Saturday
QUINCY — The Jackson-Lincoln Swimming Complex will open for the summer at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 8. The complex is hiring lifeguards in preparation for the grand opening and summer schedule. Aspiring lifeguards aged 15 and older are encouraged to apply, with the added benefit of certification reimbursement. Interested candidates can apply in person from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday at Jackson-Lincoln, located at 701 N. Eighth St.
Two-vehicle accident near Hannibal leaves one injured
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a two-vehicle accident occurred on Route MM, half a mile west of Hannibal, at 2:20 p.m. on May 31, 2024. The collision involved a 2006 Nissan 350Z and a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox traveling westbound. The driver of the Nissan 350Z, 18-year-old Gavin Schoo from Shelbina, Missouri, struck the rear of the Chevrolet Equinox driven by 65-year-old Linda Burton from New London, Missouri. Both vehicles sustained minor damage and were driven from the scene.

Quincy man arrested for multiple thefts, including stealing from Quincy Fire Department
QUINCY — Quincy Police have arrested a man who they believe may have stolen a trailer, a pickup truck and a U-Haul dolly last month. On May 24, QPD received a report of a 16 foot trailer stolen from the 2300 block on North 12th. Then on May 29, a report was made of a 1993 Dodge Dakota that was stolen from the Quincy Fire Department Training Ceneer at North 18th and Seminary Road. During the same time frame, an investigation was also being conducted by the Adams County Sheriff’s Department in reference to a stolen U-Haul car dolly from the 6600 block of Broadway.

Two arrested Tuesday in connection with vehicular hijacking incident
QUINCY — Two people from Quincy recently were arrested in connection with a vehicular hijacking incident. A report of domestic violence was made at 1:26 p.m. on May 31 with the Quincy Police Department regarding an incident that occurred in the area of 11th and Vermont in Quincy. The investigation led to the identification of an alleged suspect. An arrest warrant was then sought by the Adams County State’s Attorney’s Office for Arthur D. Clay, Jr., 39, for aggravated vehicular hijacking, possession of stolen motor vehicle and domestic battery.
