Lady Jackets start slow, then rout First Flight
This year, it was First Flight that had to make the long bus ride. It will be Lee County that rides into the second round. The Lady Jackets have, purely by coincidence, been paired up with the Nighthawks in the first round of the NCHSAA 3A state playoffs in each of the past two seasons. Last year, it was First Flight that had the higher seed, and Lee had to make a 243-mile trip to Kill Devil Hills, only for the Nighthawks to end their season.
The Bodie Island Light Shines On
When he was a child, John Fillmore Gaskill spent his summers helping his family maintain the grounds of the Bodie Island Light Station. He mostly cut grass, but in the summer of 1934, John and his father, Vernon, took on the dangerous task of scraping and repainting the lighthouse by hand. The two would climb to the top of the 156-foot tower, where they’d hoist themselves over the balcony railing and down into what they called “the box” — a small rectangular platform with guardrails around the sides. Suspended in the air by a system of ropes and pulleys, they would paint the tower as they lowered themselves down its massive side, then pull the box back up to the top and repeat the process on the next vertical section until the job was done.
North Carolina’s River Lighthouses
The Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse looks more like a red-roofed coastal cottage than a lighthouse, but its shining light has long aided Roanoke Island sailors and fishermen. Over the years, several lighthouses by that name have been stationed around the island. The current one in Manteo is a replica of an 1877 version that once stood in Wanchese. In 2004, decades after that lighthouse was decommissioned, the town of Manteo completed construction on the replica, paying tribute to a key part of Roanoke Island’s history.
