Ashland Main Street West to close for 24 hours June 3 for paving
Main Street West in Ashland will close to traffic for about 24 hours this week as a city contractor applies a microsurfacing treatment to the roadway between Ellis Avenue and Ninth Avenue West. The closure is scheduled to begin shortly before 6 a.m. Wednesday, June 3, and last until 6 a.m. Thursday, June 4, weather permitting, according to John Butler, the City of Ashland’s director of public works. The overnight closure gives the paving material time to cure, he said. Struck & Irwin Paving, Inc., of DeForest, will perform the work, with engineering oversight from the City of Ashland Engineering Division. Microsurfacing is a thin surface preservation treatment that seals cracks, improves skid resistance, and extends the life of asphalt, according to the city. The project will affect downtown businesses along the corridor. City project manager Niles Fetter has been going door to door to notify owners, Butler said. Weather could change the schedule.

WIS 13 culvert replacement south of Washburn to start June 8
A $1.5 million project to replace three aging culverts carrying Little Whittlesey Creek beneath WIS 13 with a new bridge south of Washburn is scheduled to begin June 8. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation awarded the contract to Northern Interstate Construction, Inc., of South Range. The culverts, installed in 1981, have reached the end of their service lives. Crews will build a temporary bypass to carry traffic during the work, replace the culvert pipes with a bridge, mill and pave about 1,000 feet of approaching pavement, restore the stream bed, install new guardrail, and add riprap. The bypass will be removed once the bridge is complete. The new guardrail will require relocating the driveway of a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service facility slightly to the north. The existing driveway will stay open until the new one is built, and the property will be restored after construction. WIS 13 will remain open throughout, though motorists will encounter daytime single-lane closures with flaggers directing traffic. The project is scheduled for completion in mid-October.
