SULLIVAN COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) – The Sullivan County Humane Society and a local veterinary hospital are teaming up to make adopting an elderly pet with medical needs less costly.

According to a news release from the humane society, the Silver Whiskers Program encourages people to adopt a senior pet from area shelters by helping cover the costs of vet trips.

The humane society partnered with Andes-Straley Veterinary Hospital in Kingsport to create the program.

The Silver Whiskers Program allows people who adopt a senior pet from either PetWorks or the Sullivan County Animal Shelter to be covered for up to $1,000 per year in non-routine vet costs. The care must be received at Andes-Straley to qualify.

The program is open to all people and families who adopt senior pets from the two shelters. The release states that for a limited time, the Sullivan County Humane Society will cover the adoption fee for senior pets adopted by individuals who are age 60 and older.

“We are thrilled to introduce this innovative program to our community,” Carol Perkins, President of the Sullivan County Humane Society, stated in the news release. “Senior pets, some of the most loving and affectionate animals available, often face challenges finding forever homes due to concerns about medical expenses. With the Silver Whiskers Program, we aim to eliminate this barrier and make it easier for loving families to welcome older animals into their lives.”
