Big Byron, Forreston wins key Rockford-area football playoff roundup

One of the defending state champions from the Rockford area, Lena-Winslow, fell to rival Forreston in a playoff football showdown on Halloween afternoon, while the other, Byron, easily soared into the next round. Le-Win, last year's Class 1A state champs and the perennial power out of the NUIC, was no match for Forreston in the first round on Saturday as the Cardinals rolled to a 22-6 victory. The Panthers had won seven 1A state championships since 2010, and they had made six straight 1A state championship games. The top teams from the NIC-10 found their way into the next round of the IHSA football playoffs all using a different method of hauling in Round 1 wins on Friday, Oct. 30. More Rockford-area football: Top 5 phases of the game to watch in Rockford-area playoff football No. 1-seeded Harlem (10-0) rallied from first- and third-quarter deficits and scored with 16 seconds left to hand St. Charles East a dramatic 21-14 ending to its season. "It just felt amazing; like nothing I've ever felt before," Harlem tight end Noah Crandall said of his game-winning 3-yard touchdown catch with 15.9 seconds left to play. "Now we have to find a way to use this and make a run." Rockford Public Schools see improved graduation and literacy rates, continued attendance struggles

ROCKFORD — Rockford Public Schools saw graduation rates rise for the fifth straight year, reaching the highest level since the data was tracked in this format. The four-year graduation rate for the district stands at 81%, according to new data released Friday on the Illinois State Report Card. That’s up more than 16 percentage points from 64.4% in 2021. However, it still lags the statewide graduation rate of 89.8%, according to the state data.

Freeport students will not face discipline for walkout

Students at Freeport High School who peacefully took part in a walkout over concerns involving a personnel matter will not face disciplinary action, Freeport School District 145 said in a community announcement. The district stated that it was aware the some students planned to participate in the walkout Oct. 27 and that it respects students' desire to voice their concerns but cannot disclose details about employee matters because of its legal responsibility to maintain confidentiality. Regular attendance policies will still apply to students who participate in the walkout, the announcement states, and students participating in the walkout will be expected to make up missed work. Classes will remain on schedule for students who do not participate. The district said student and staff safety and well-being remain its highest priorities. School counselors and social workers will be available to students who want someone to talk to. The district also said it remains committed to providing a safe, respectful and supportive learning environment for students and staff.
