SoBos preparing for playoff opener at Polo

SOUTH BELOIT — The South Beloit football team figures they are as dangerous of a team as a 10-seed could be. Despite being a double- digit seed going against seventh- seeded Polo Saturday at noon, head coach Josh Redieske believes his SoBos are ready to make a run. “I think we are a pretty dangerous team,” Redieske said. “I know there are a lot of people that believe whoever wins our matchup with Polo is capable of making a deep run. They’ve got a lot of history on their side for sure. But I think we are faster and more athletic than they are. It’s going to be a fun matchup for sure.” Senior running back Chase Herrington has been the true headline-maker this season for the SoBos. Herrington has carried the ball 153 times for 1,489 yards and an eye-popping 21 touchdowns. He’s also got 12 catches for 308 yards and six touchdowns as he catches passes from his brother James. He’s been terrific defensively, too, with 61 tackles and a defensive touchdown as well. An elected member of College of DuPage’s (COD) Student Leadership Council (SLC) has been removed for the use of racial slurs. SLC’s Operations Officer Luka Volarevic marks the second time in less than a year that an SLC official has admitted to using racial slurs. Volarevic says he will “take the rest of this year to grow” following his removal from his position for his previous use of racial slurs and a recent incident where he admitted he nearly said a racial slur in front of another SLC member.

Hononegah starts playoffs hosting Willowbrook on Friday night

ROCKTON — Brian Zimmerman knows exactly how the seniors on his football team are feeling. Every game now could be their last at Hononegah. “I try to not think about that,” said the retiring head coach, who has had 10 playoff teams. “For me, it’s put your head down and go to work. I’m sure when it all over I will reflect on that and be sad. My heart will go out to these seniors when it does end. I have loved the game for so long and being around it as long as I have, I’ve been very fortunate.” His 2026 Indians have been resilient. They lost top returning receiver Caleb Parker-Lones to a season-ending injury in the off-season and their leading running back and one of their top tacklers, Brody Sendele, went down in the team’s only loss of the season at Harlem in Week 4. Students learn about nature at Oakdale preserve

More than 300 students explored conservation, ecology and Native American cultural traditions during the annual Keepers of the Land Conservation Day at Freeport's Oakdale Nature Preserve on Sept. 29. The event brought together students for a full day of outdoor learning, according to a community announcement. Students rotated through five educational presentations led by conservation professionals, educators and volunteers, covering topics ranging from tree identification and watersheds to prairie ecology and vermicomposting. Students participated in hands-on activities focused on tree identification, nature hikes, watersheds and the water cycle, prairie and soil ecology, Illinois raptors, aquatic animals, seed science and vermicomposting. A featured part of the program included presentations from three Native American speakers, who shared cultural knowledge through discussions about a Native American lodge, storytelling and music. Organizers said the presentations helped students learn about connections between culture, people and the natural environment. Additional activities were provided by the Illinois Conservation Police and the University of Illinois Traveling Science Center, giving students opportunities to engage with conservation and environmental science through demonstrations and interactive exhibits.
