A Georgia college student aspiring to be a nurse practitioner was fatally shot near a dorm at Kennesaw State University.

On Sunday (May 19), KSU announced in a statement on X, formerly Twitter, that a female student was shot and killed on Saturday (May 18) in front of the Austin Residence complex following a dispute.

The university identified the victim as 21-year-old Alasia Franklin , per PEOPLE .

On the day of the shooting, KSU's police department issued a secure-in-place notice to the community after receiving reports of an armed intruder on campus. Police said the university was all clear roughly 45 minutes after issuing the alert.

Samuel Harris was arrested Saturday on charges of murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. The university confirmed that he was not a student.

“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the victim's family and friends during this incredibly difficult time,” KSU President Kathy S. Schwaig said in the statement.

Senior student Anthony Harrison told local outlets that he woke up to the sound of gunfire and found Franklin on the ground outside.

“And all I can remember is just walking out and being completely horrified of what that scene was,” Harrison said.

The university noted that it was "providing support and resources to those affected by this tragedy” in its statement.
