A suspect is dead and three Kenner cops are recovering today after a Sunday SWAT standoff.

Kenner Police Captain Michael Cunningham says the good news is that all three shot officers are doing well.

"Three officers that were shot, two of them have been released from the hospital. One of them is in stable condition in the hospital," Cunningham said Sunday. The third officer was reportedly discharged from the hospital today.

Cunningham says a SWAT robot was also "immobilized" when KPD tried to arrest Matthew Lathers for an earlier armed robbery and attempted murder.

The Kenner SWAT team returned fire and backed out of the house after the cops were shot.

The JPSO SWAT team then moved in.

Sheriff Joe Lopinto says Lathers shot at them as they arrived.

A short time later JPSO killed Lathers.

"One of our snipers was able to return fire on him and take him out at that point in time."

It all started the when Lathers allegedly shot two people in a car outside the home. Police say they think the suspect thought the innocent bystanders, who were attending services at a nearby church, were cops.

One of those innocent bystanders was last listed in critical condition.

Authorities say one of the shot cops was hit in the midsection, but the bullet missed vital organs.  The other officers were hit in the arm and the leg.
