Saginaw credit union executive fired over Lake America photo. Here's why
Family First Credit Union in Saginaw announced on Friday, Sept. 28 , that Jane Smith, the chief executive officer, was no longer employed by the company after she posted a photo of her and her family in "Lake America" sweatshirts. "We weren't trying to make a political statement," Smith told WJRT, the ABC affiliate in Flint-Saginaw that first reported the news. "However, we were, you know, kind of poking fun at the fact that you know one of the Great Lakes' names were getting changed." U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order in August renaming Lake Ontario as Lake America amid a trade battle with Canada. The lake's name comes from Native American language and has been used since the 17th century. Smith says she and her family, who were leaving for a 10-day trip to Nova Scotia took a photo together and put it through Chat GPT, an AI chatbot created by OpenAI. Related: Donald Trump says it's Lake America. Where did name Ontario come from? "I am not a person that would ever want to offend or hurt anybody," she said. "I do regret having any post that would make someone feel like we don't value them

Since moving from its former location on S. Saginaw Road to Joe Mann Boulevard in 2015, the business has continued to grow — and is preparing for another expansion. On Saturday, Oct. 3, Midland Ford Lincoln will host an anniversary party from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to celebrate 40 years in the community. They will be offering food and giveaways along with deals on both new and pre-owned vehicles. What inspired you to start your business? When I first started in sales, I realized helping customers was my passion. My sons were young, and I wanted to work for myself instead of working for people who didn’t share my vision. I felt the culture in Midland aligned with the culture I wanted to create. How has your business evolved since it was founded? We started in a small dealership on Saginaw Road. Through our dedication to providing customer-focused transportation solutions, we eventually outgrew that location and moved to our new dealership in 2015. Vehicles
