Man killed in Westport shooting died on birthday, 5 others injured

KCPD has identified the victim who died in the overnight shooting as Jahquan M. Robinson . Robinson, born May 26, 2000, died on his 24th birthday .

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Six people were struck and one was killed in a shooting early Sunday morning near the Westport Entertainment District in Kansas City, Missouri, according to police.

At around 1:20 a.m., the Kansas City Police Department received multiple reports of gunshot sounds east of the intersection of Westport Road and Broadway.

When officers arrived at the scene, they located seven shooting victims. Five of the victims appeared to have non-life-threatening injuries, while another victim, a man, was said to be unresponsive, according to KCPD.

Officers called EMS to the scene where they took the shooting victims, including the unresponsive man, to a hospital. Doctors later pronounced the man dead.

KCPD said one person is currently detained, and that preliminary investigations indicate that a group of people east of the intersection and on the south side of the street were involved in a disturbance that turned into gunfire. According to the police, one or more people may have been involved.

There was possibly a large number of people in the area of the shooting, KCPD said. They ask that if anyone heard or saw anything, to call homicide detectives directly at (816) 234-5043 or the TIPS hotline at (816) 474-8477. There is a reward of up to $25,000 for anonymous tips sent to the hotline.

UPDATE : The subject of interest that was detained last night is now out of custody. They were released pending further investigation. The subject is an employee/security officer for Westport Public Safety Security who had responded to that area upon hearing the sound of shots.

Detectives will continue to investigate and compile all of the investigative findings detailing all persons involvement and provide those findings to prosecutors for their review.
