KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Six kids in Kansas City are mourning the death of their mother. She died on Mother’s Day. Her husband says they’re simply just hurt.

Now, this family wants to not only remember who she was, but send a message so others don’t have to sit where they now sit.

Mikalia Patterson was just 36 years old.

Her lungs had begun to fail months ago, but she was just about to start the process that could have given her many more days on this planet but she slipped away just after midnight Sunday.

I-670 in KC considered one of the deadliest stretches of road in US: report

“Everybody knew she was kind, she helped out everybody she was a good person,” Cleon Patterson, Mikalia’s husband said.

“She was my best friend, she, her smile, she was caring, she was just full of joy,” Meziyah Herron, her daughter said.

Mikalia Patterson was the best mom in the world to these six kids, spanning the age of 8 to 17,
she was their rock, their everything.

“A caregiver, I loved her laugh, I loved her smile – I loved everything about her,” another one of her daughter’s said.

High school sweethearts Cleon and Mikalia fell in love as teenagers.

Twenty-one years and six kids later, they still loved each other, just like the day they met.

“We took the kids on all the trips showed them the world,” Cleon said.

In December, Patterson’s lungs began to fail. Over the next several months she would be in and out of the hospital.

On Sunday, after midnight, the dedicated wife and mom took her last breath just one day before she was set to head to St. Louis to begin the process of getting a lung transplant.

One day from the rest of her life, a chance she sadly won’t get.

“It hurt, like throw up sick hurt. It is not anything to play with, everybody needs to get checked, like people are dying left and right. You could be here one day and gone the next just like my wife was,” Cleon said.

Now six kids and a father will try to their best to go on without the person who made their world go round.

“Anytime she walked into a room she was full of just great spirits, I just loved everything about her,” Meziyah said.
