Patrick Mahomes has explained in a new interview why he avoids partaking in controversial topics in politics, including presidential endorsements and gun control.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback said he would like to see voters do their own research ahead of the November elections, which could include a rematch between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump . Mahomes did not provide any endorsement in the 2020 presidential election, and indicated he has no plans to give one for 2024 .

“I don’t want to pressure anyone to vote for a certain president,” Mahomes said . “I want people to use their voice, whoever they believe in. I want them to do the research.”

While Mahomes did not endorse Biden or Trump, he did join NBA star LeBron James’s “More Than A Vote” campaign, which encouraged black people to get registered to vote ahead of the 2020 elections.

Another controversial topic that Mahomes has avoided is gun control, which some people called on him to discuss after the shooting in Kansas City, Missouri , during the Chiefs Super Bowl victory parade. While Mahomes donated $50,000 to help the shooting victims and visited some of them at hospitals, he chose not to make any calls for tighter laws , though he did say that there needs to be a solution to gun violence .

“I continue to educate myself,” Mahomes said. “I don't want to make a quick response to something that takes a lot of education to really learn and make a swaying comment based off that. But I know we have to find a solution of some way to make this stuff stop.”

Mahomes indicating he will not give any presidential candidate his endorsement comes after movie star and wrestler Dwayne Johnson said he is not planning to endorse any candidate for 2024, contrasting with his endorsement for Biden ahead of the 2020 election. Johnson explained that he thought giving his endorsement was “the best decision for me” at the time.

One celebrity many suspect could provide an endorsement to Biden is musician Taylor Swift, who previously endorsed Biden in 2020. While Swift encouraged her social media followers to go out and vote in the primary elections on Super Tuesday, she did not specify who they ought to vote for.
