CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The Kanawha County Commission has indicated that it is actively working to fill the current vacancy within the commission following the resignation of former commissioner Kent Carper .

Following the resignation of Carper, which officially went into effect on May 12, 2024, the Kanawha County Commission will be required by state law to appoint a replacement commissioner to fill the vacancy with thirty days of the resignation.

These requirements have been implemented as part of West Virginia Code 3-10-1 and West Virginia Code 3-10-7, and the commission has indicated that swift work is currently underway to determine an appropriate replacement for Carper’s former position.

The Kanawha County Commission has expressed a commitment to full transparency throughout the selection process and has begun an advertisement campaign with regard to the vacancy on the Kanawha County website.

Furthermore, it has been stated that any and all reasonable attempts to provide an opportunity to apply for the position is afforded to any and all interested candidates. It should also be noted that qualifying candidates for the vacancy must reside in the region of either District 1 or District 3 .

Interested candidates have been encouraged to submit resumes along with cover letters to Jennifer Herrald, the city manager, at jennifer@kanawha.us. The deadline to apply for the position is 5:00pm on Friday, May 24, 2024.

All resumes and cover letters submitted in relation to the position will be forwarded to current members of the Kanawha County Commission to undergo the review process.

A new commissioner is expected to be appointed during a special meeting of the commission, which is expected to be held on Thursday, May 20, 2024.

The resignation of former commissioner Kent Carper follows an investigation by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia which determined that health issues may have been a factor in conduct pertinent to the investigation itself.
