Closures signal ills for Michigan's independent pharmacies

HAZEL PARK — One recent day, Matt Marinco filled a prescription for a patient's diabetes medication and lost nearly $133 on the transaction. The two-month supply cost the pharmacy $1,933.32, but insurance reimbursement totaled just $1,800.40. “Those losses are unsustainable,” said Marinco, pharmacist in charge at his family's Marinco Pharmacy, which has served Hazel Park for more than 80 years. Some pharmacists say the reimbursement issue has forced them out of business. Six independent pharmacies closed in Michigan in October, including four HomeTown Pharmacy locations and Fred's Pharmacies in Three Rivers and Vicksburg. HomeTown Pharmacy cited financial strain caused by pharmacy benefit managers' reimbursement practices as the main reason for the closure of an outlet near Muskegon and three in the Traverse City area. The closures are part of a broader trend. About 275 pharmacies closed statewide in 2024, including 91 independent outlets, according to the Michigan Pharmacists Association. Independent pharmacies across Michigan are facing mounting financial pressures, with owners saying PBM policies are making it increasingly difficult to stay afloat. Meanwhile, the PBM industry disputes that it is driving closures, saying pharmacies have ways to manage costs. At the same time, pharmacies are looking for ways to strengthen their

Abdul El-Sayed’s victory in Michigan propels ‘Medicare for All’ debate

Her patients arriving for triage are sicker than ever. They can’t afford many of the prescriptions they get in the ER. And sometimes when patients die, she wonders if she could have saved them had she not been caring for five or six other people at once.

As Medicaid rules change, students, hospitals, and community groups help people keep coverage

Public health, explained: Sign up to receive Healthbeat’s free national newsletter here . Inside a small gas station, surrounded by chips, candy, cigarettes, and lottery tickets, a group of public health graduate students waited as the cashier finished helping customers. When it was their turn, Debbie Kariuki and her fellow Brown University students stepped forward with their stacks of Medicaid flyers. Through a glass partition, they explained to the woman at the register that they were sharing information about changes to Medicaid that could affect people’s healthcare coverage. “There wasn’t actually much room for us to post flyers,” Kariuki told me. But the cashier was eager to help alert others in her South Providence, Rhode Island, neighborhood. She welcomed the English and Arabic flyers, clearing out space for them at the checkout counter. She also asked for additional flyers in Pashto. The Brown students are part of wide-ranging efforts to reach millions of people across the country who are affected by major changes to Medicaid that start for certain recipients in January. To keep or obtain Medicaid healthcare coverage, these people will be required to demonstrate they meet new work or “community engagement” requirements , and they will face more

Mental health resources shortage sparks upcoming town hall in Cadillac

Advocacy leaders pointed to local facility closures and systemic funding shortages as major drivers of the region’s mental health challenges. Amanda Siggins, with We The People Action Fund noted that rural areas are particularly affected by these cuts. “We are closing not just mental health facilities, but hospitals, counseling offices, while people in the communities like Cadillac suffer with mental health,” Siggins said. “Unfortunately, at state and federal levels, we are losing drastic amounts of funding to access these things for people and to make sure that they have them available.”
