JOPLIN, Mo (KOAM) - The City of Joplin remains in the grip of the aftermath of the storm that hit on May 6, 2024, as residents and authorities collaborate to address the extensive damage it caused.

According to preliminary assessments by the National Weather Service, an EF-1-rated tornado tore through the area, leaving a trail of destruction stretching 4.49 miles from southeast Joplin into Duquesne.

Mayor Cortez has shifted the city's focus from emergency response to recovery, stating, "Now we know people are safe, the City is past the emergency rescue phase, and roads are clear, our top priority has shifted to helping our citizens clean up a tremendous amount of downed trees and vegetation debris."

Mayor Cortez commends the efforts of City staff, community members, and volunteers for their dedication to the ongoing clean-up operations, showcasing the community's resilience in the face of adversity.

Here's an overview of the Tree Damage/Vegetation Clean-Up Plan and how residents can contribute:

    1. Insurance Guidance : Property owners are encouraged to promptly contact their insurance providers for assistance in documenting claims and facilitating clean-up efforts.

    2. Vegetation Drop-Off : The City has established a Tree Limb and Foliage Drop-Off Facility at 1702 N. Schifferdecker Ave., offering free access daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. until Sunday, May 19.

    3. Avoid Street Obstructions : Residents are reminded to refrain from placing tree limbs in streets, ensuring that debris is stacked neatly along curbs or streetsides without impeding drainage or utility access.

    4. City Council Deliberations : The City Council is set to discuss the next phases of the clean-up plan during the Monday, May 13 work session, considering potential costs and logistical considerations.

    5. Burning Permissions : The Joplin Fire Department has temporarily lifted the burn ban within city limits until May 25, 2024, allowing residents to burn tree and vegetation piles under specified guidelines.

    6. Volunteer Support : Residents in need of assistance with debris removal can request support from volunteers through the City's Planning, Development, and Neighborhood Services.

    7. Trash Disposal : Smaller debris amounts may be disposed of with regular trash pick-up, provided that tree limbs are properly cut, bundled, and prepared according to guidelines.

City Manager Nick Edwards expresses gratitude to the community for their proactive engagement, emphasizing the opportunity for the City to demonstrate its commitment to serving residents.
